12 Answers to Recap the Most Exciting KY State Meet EVER Jonathan Grooms Nov 9, 2014

The 2014 Kentucky State Cross Country Meet was as good of a collection of 6 races that I have ever seen in my 20 years of attending state meets. There was excitement and mystery coming into the races, some of that played out as expected and then as always the surprises do happen. Before the KY State Meet, I posed the Top 12 Questions Going into the KY State XC Meet and now we get to see what really happened on these questions.  Check out the next 12 slides a recap of the KY State Meet and how those questions played out.

Titan XC Classic Recap: Gawarecki Rolls, Cooper v. Bode.. St. X B Squad Wins Varsity Tyler Karnes Oct 11, 2014

I woke up this morning and, like many others, made the drive down I-64 to Collins High School ready to watch the debut race of Gabby Karas’ season. Delaying the start of her season to peak during Nationals, it seemed an ideal time, given the fact that this was her home meet. Unfortunately, it was not to be, as Gabby was not able to finish the race and had to drop out just before the mile due to an ankle injury. It’s a tough break for a good kid and every fan of Cross Country in Kentucky should be rooting for this young lady to make a speedy recovery and be able to represent our state on a national level.

Palatine Invite Preview: Another Good One Brewing Tony Jones Sep 26, 2014

In the NCAA ranks, this will be the first weekend that invitationals will count toward their "countable season". The countable season basically means results will count toward at-large consideration into the NCAA Championships. The IHSA does not have this (perhaps they should and that is a discussion for another day)...

Which Regions are the Toughest in Each Class? Tyler Karnes Aug 18, 2014

In the continuation of our Pre-Season coverage, we’ll be taking a look at the toughest regions in the state in each class. These regions were decided based upon their previous finishes at State and the current projections for who will be racing for each team this season. I’ve tried to use as much empirical data as possible and have compared all regions based on their CURRENT classifications.

KY Athlete Blogs: Kyle Yates, St. Xavier - "RAIN RATING" Oct 8, 2013

On Saturday at the Greater Louisville Classic, some of my teammates and I were slated to run the JV race while the rest of the team was in North Carolina for Great American. When I arrived at around one o'clock, there was a nice little drizzle going. It was definitely something I could handle. When two o'clock rolled around, the torrential downpour had begun. Then, there was a problem with the timing system, followed by numerous lighting strikes, and the race was called off.

Flashback to St. X's 1st Trip to Nike Cross Nationals with Thomas Davis Jonathan Grooms Dec 13, 2012

Thomas Davis is a 2006 St. Xavier High School graduate.  His senior year he and his teammates were on the first Kentucky team to compete at Nike Cross Nationals (formerly Nike Team Nationals.)  He went on to win the Class AAA 1600m State Championship and continued his running career at Vanderbilt till 2010.  Below he answers a few questions about the trip to Oregon in 2005 in a flashback interview.

NXN Boys Team Preview Stephen Underwood Nov 30, 2012

It’s fascinating how the history of Nike Cross Nationals has evolved in terms of comparing the girls’ and boys’ championships.  With the girls, you had a program in Fayetteville-Manlius which has won six titles in a row -- not to mention another in the same state, Saratoga Springs, which has claimed three consecutive runner-up finishes.  For the boys, however, there has not only never been a repeat champion, but no club has won two titles overall in the 8-year history of the event.  Eight different NXN boys’ championships, eight different winners.

Q & A with St. Xavier Head Coach Chuck Medley about Nike Cross Nationals this Saturday Jonathan Grooms Nov 29, 2012

Chuck Medley is the Head Coach at St. Xavier High School in Louisville, Kentucky.  His senior heavy team won the Nike Cross Nationals Southeast Regional last Saturday in North Carolina.  They won the top meets in Kentucky (Trinity Invitational) and Illinois (Palatine Invitational.)  They were also Runner-Ups at the nationally renowned Great American Cross Country Festival in North Carolina.  Below he answers questions about this weekend's Nike Cross Nationals Race in Portland, Oregon.

November 24th: Kentucky's Day of Running Destiny! Jonathan Grooms Nov 23, 2012

Tomorrow brings the running world in Kentucky two huge races both being held miles away in North Carolina.  Foot Locker South sees Kentucky potentially having its first back to back national qualifier with Jacob Thomson.  Nike Cross Southeast has Assumption back in a spot to qualify again after becoming the first Kentucky girls team ever last year.  St. Xavier is also the same potential spot looking at their second trip to Portland (made NXN in 2005, before Regional Qualifying.)  Regardless of what actually happens this day just like the whole year, it will be one that shows Kentucky is on the move up .

Lexington Catholic Large School Recap: St. X 22 Points Only Tyler Karnes Oct 20, 2012

It’s always a good insight on both sides to be able to see how the races play out and teams stack up in the pecking order when the small schools are separated from the large schools at the Lexington Catholic Invitational. It’s as close as we will get to a preview of the state meet and it makes for great races all day long.

Movers and Shakers: Fall Break Edition Jonathan Grooms Oct 9, 2012

This past weekend was strange, there were a ton of meets but nothing was really huge.  There were some quality match-ups but even that was hard to decipher as many schools were missing runners.  Fall break is part of it, minor injuries, and just simply being tired from all the racing over the last seven weeks.  Here are some of the things that stuck out to me from this past week.

Hillbilly Run Recap: Wolken, Dowdy Win Tyler Karnes Oct 6, 2012

In my opinion, the cross country season really isn’t in full swing until the ground crunches under your feet as you walk to your car on your way to the meet. For me, that day came today, as I left my house in Louisville to an outside temperature of about 38 degrees heading to the Hillbilly Run in Bardstown.

Old Man Mile Preview: Let the Aches Begin Zack Beavin Apr 16, 2012

The following is the most complete, though still sadly lacking, preview of the much anticipated, 1st annual “Old Man Mile” to be held at St. X on April 17th. It turns out many old guys conveniently have previous “commitments” or “injuries” that have limited the field of this competitive race. (names such as David Flaugher, Glenn McCaslin, Chi Swain, Craig Riedling, among others come to mind…) However, we still expect a strong field with a combined age of about 500 years. Below are the bios for the few competitors we could reach before the event kicks off.

Bobby Curtis Runs New York City Marathon, Finishes 15th Overall Nov 7, 2011

At the 43rd running of the ING New York City Marathon on Sunday former Villanova great Bobby Curtis made a terrific debut in the first marathon of his career. Curtis was the fifth American to finish and came in 15th overall with a time of 2:16.44 on the world-famous, five-borough New York course.

5 KY #1's Make Trip to Great American Jonathan Grooms Oct 1, 2011

A few of Kentucky’s best runners will compete tomorrow at the Great American Cross Country Festival in North Carolina.  Annually it is one of the top meets in the nation attracting many of the best.  Kentucky is well represented by two teams each ranked #1 in the current Power 10 All-Class Rankings and 3 Individual Class #1’s. (AAA #1 Assumption with Coach Joe Newton of York (IL)) Power 10 Jonathan Grooms Sep 30, 2011 Power 10 – September 30, 2011 These are the top best teams and individuals in the state of Kentucky regardless of school classification. These are not your typical rankings in the sense because without classes the KY State Meet would have more depth so a team’s 5th place runner in Class AA who normally scores well enough with a 18:00 is suddenly too far back to matter in a one class system.  The need for top runner is similar, that is obvious it is just on an exaggerated scale.

Trinity/Valkyrie (KY) Invitational Preview Jonathan Grooms Sep 15, 2011

The 2011 Trinity/Valkyrie Invitational has a lot going for it.  The oldest meet in Kentucky not to mention the biggest has made Louisville the place where several of the best from all the surrounding states meet to showdown.  This year’s version is no different with nationally ranked runners and teams from Kentucky, Indiana, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Ohio in attendance.  In total close to 3,500 runners will roll on a super fast course with a great weather forecast projected. 9/7/11 State Cross Country Rankings Jonathan Grooms Sep 7, 2011 is pleased to present the first set of Kentucky State Cross Country Rankings.  These are based on meets held up to September 6, 2011.  Each class rankings contain a top 10 teams and the top 20 individuals.  The next set will be out in two weeks.

Class AAA Boys Team Preview Jonathan Grooms Aug 21, 2011

The Class AAA Boys competition is always the most fierce individual and team battle in November and 2011 looks to be another year of the same.  Last year at the 2010 championship, fans saw the best head to head dual over the last 10 years with Daviess County’s Evan Ehrenheim and Trinity’s Jacob Wildenmann running side by side for three miles with Ehrenheim then pulling away to win.  Wildenmann’s second place finish helped lead Trinity to an upset victory which was their 18th state title in school history.  That win gave Trinity the record for the most state team titles in Kentucky history. Pre-Season State Cross Country Team Rankings Jonathan Grooms Aug 15, 2011 is pleased to present the first set of Kentucky State Cross Country Rankings for the 2011 Season.  These are not based on any automated time order.  Instead they are taken from looking at various races from last season, especially the Kentucky State Cross Country Meet.  With the loss of the Franklin County Invitational and the Lexington Catholic Invitational last year, there were less common races to try and compare the teams from different areas of the state.  This left many of these teams only racing each other once at the Kentucky State Cross Country Meet.  These team rankings along with individual athlete class rankings will be released every two weeks starting September 6, 2011.

The Mobile Challenge of Champions is going to be run this Friday and Saturday in Alabama.  This event is typically one of the top meets in the Southeast this early in the season.  In fact three of Kentucky’s best performances ever have happened at this meet.  Owensboro speedster Casey Combest ran a 10.34 100m Dash in 1999, Jonathan Brown former Union County/Western Kentucky jumper leaped 24-03 in 1999 also, and Andy Fryman of Mason County/University of Kentucky threw 62-10 in the Shot Put in 2003.  All three of those performances are Mobile Meet Records.  This year looks to be no different with several Kentucky athletes making the trip south to compete.
