INDIANAPOLIS -- The impact performer that Chris Striegel was expected to be is exactly what the Bellarmine University sophomore is turning out to be.
On Tuesday, the Great Lakes Valley Conference honored Striegel as its cross country Runner of the Week after he placed second overall among a Division I heavy contingent Friday at Notre Dame's National Catholic Invitational.
"He showed he will be a major force in the GLVC and D-2," said Jim Vargo, BU's director of cross country and track and field, after the race.
The only runner that Striegel followed at the Notre Dame Golf Course was Canisius' Chad Maloy. The University of Louisville transfer topped all other competitors in the 274-member field after running a 25:00.2 in the 8K race. The Prospect, Kentucky, native and St. Xavier High School product was best among the College Division participants.
Striegel, who tied former All-American Robert Sandlin for BU's top placement at the Catholic Invitational, led the Knights to a runner-up team finish in the College Division.
