Former St. X Miler Thomas Cave Named GLVC Runner of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS Bellarmine University sophomore middle distance runner Thomas Cave and Missouri S&T senior pole vaulter Cody Durand have been respectively named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, it was announced by the league office Wednesday.

Cave fell less than one second short of an NCAA provisional time in the mile, finishing fifth in his section Friday with a time of 4:13.27 at the Grand Valley Big Meet hosted by Grand Valley State. On Saturday, however, Cave would not be denied in the 800 meters, posting an NCAA provisional time of 1:52.96. His mark bested all competitors in the event and is currently tops among conference runners, while his time in the mile is second in the league.

A native of Louisville and a St. Xavier High School product, Cave earns his first career weekly honor and the first for Bellarmine since Robert Sandlin was honored on Feb. 25, 2014.

Durand finished the regular season at last week's OBU Bison Invitational with a clearance of 15-11 in the pole vault. The mark ranks him first in the GLVC and 12th in the national rankings.

The Peoria, Illinois, native garners his first weekly award and is the first Miner to be recognized by the league since Ryan McGuire was honored on Feb. 25, 2014.
