Preview of the Fast Cats Classic
In my opinion, the cross country season really isn’t in full swing until the ground crunches under your feet as you walk to your car on your way to the meet. For me, that day came today, as I left my house in Louisville to an outside temperature of about 38 degrees heading to the Hillbilly Run in Bardstown.
The Greater Louisville Classic is held on the same course as the Trinity/Valkyrie Invitational, but they are two totally different meets each year. Trinity/Valkyrie brings an intense team battle that is more regionally based (KY, IN, OH) with most of the top Louisville schools in attendance, whereas Greater Louisville brings in more depth from throughout the state of Kentucky giving teams from the far west (Paducah area) a chance to compete against teams from the north and areas right outside of Louisville.
Exceeding expectations is nothing new to Liz Anderson. For the junior cross country runner and her team, the expectations have never been higher. The season has only just begun, but the Commodores are already making headlines, thanks primarily to their remarkable success last fall.

In June 2010, Washington University in Saint Louis runners Dave Spandorfer and Mike Burnstein came up with the idea for a socially conscious running apparel line that would help support people in need throughout the world. That summer when the duo returned to cross country practice at Wash U, one of their teammates David Hamm, a 2009 duPont Manual graduate heard them talking about their idea.

Mary Grace Pellegrini was a 2008 graduate of duPont Manual High School in Louisville. While in high school she was a three-time Kentucky State Track Champion and helped lead her team to the 2006 Kentucky State Cross Country Class AAA Team Championship. Her senior year she earned All-American honors with her Runner-Up finish in the 5000 Meter Run at Nike Indoor Nationals. She is now a senior at the University of Michigan, where she is a varsity member of the #18 ranked Lady Wolverines. KYtrackXC.com Power 10 – September 30, 2011 These are the top best teams and individuals in the state of Kentucky regardless of school classification. These are not your typical rankings in the sense because without classes the KY State Meet would have more depth so a team’s 5th place runner in Class AA who normally scores well enough with a 18:00 is suddenly too far back to matter in a one class system. The need for top runner is similar, that is obvious it is just on an exaggerated scale.
The Franklin County Invitational was the big meet of last weekend with several of the top ranked teams competing head to head. Below is a breakdown of who beat whom.

The Class AAA Boys competition is always the most fierce individual and team battle in November and 2011 looks to be another year of the same. Last year at the 2010 championship, fans saw the best head to head dual over the last 10 years with Daviess County’s Evan Ehrenheim and Trinity’s Jacob Wildenmann running side by side for three miles with Ehrenheim then pulling away to win. Wildenmann’s second place finish helped lead Trinity to an upset victory which was their 18th state title in school history. That win gave Trinity the record for the most state team titles in Kentucky history.

The 1st Annual Fast Cats Classic will be run on Saturday at Yellow Creek Park. It is being co-hosted by Daviess County High School, Kentucky Wesleyan, and Brescia University, giving the fans some high school and college action. Without the usual Lexington Catholic Invitational this meet as the potential to be the top Class AAA Boys Pre-State meet this year. Four of the current top five squads in the KYtrackXC.com Class AAA Boys rankings will be on hand, including #1 St. Xavier, #3 Butler, #4 Apollo, and #5 Daviess County. Also journeying down from Louisville will be Class AAA Girls #2 duPont Manual to battle with #3 Daviess County.
On a hot and dry day in Kentucky, Chris Walden (Carmel, IN) and Emma Brink (Sacred Heart, KY) took the individual titles at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in some blazing times. Walden's 14:57 is an improvement upon his showing last weekend against Zach Wills in Ohio, while Brink is a repeat winner after a close win last year. Here's a look at the races from today. Another edition of the Trinity/Valkyrie Invitational is upon and there is plenty of anticipation this time around. Carmel (IN) will make the trip south to see if they can steal the show at another big invite, while some of Kentucky's finest will look to make their name against some national-level talent. Full preview, forecast, and virtual meet breakdown are inside.
It was all Maddox Patterson on the girls' side today in the varsity race, but everything else was not quite what was expected coming in, making the outlook of the season just a little more intriguing as we see more of what the different classes have to show. Athletes of the week for sprints, distance, and field events.
Athletes of the Week for May 12th.
Instead of the typical one male and female high school awardee each week, KYtrackXC.com is going to expand the awards to a Sprinter, Distance, and Field Event Athlete of the Week for each gender for the rest of the Outdoor Season.
Normally there would only be one athlete of the week but with so many great performances I thought I would pass along some recognition to three of the top performers for each gender from Saturday.
"We couldn't be happier with Liz, Kara and Megan coming into our distance program next fall," Coach Keith noted. "This will make up our fourth recruiting class since I have been at Vanderbilt and they will offer quality depth to a group of women who made some very nice strides last year. With good health and chemistry, I can see next year's team setting a new standard for Vanderbilt cross country."
Last year the Daviess County boys made the trip to Nike Cross Nationals Southeast in North Carolina and returned with a third place finish. This year the Class AAA Boys Champion St. Xavier will make a run at a top two finish which would earn them a trip to Nike Cross Nationals. The ladies of duPont Manual, fourth place finishers at the Class AAA State Meet, will try for first or second in the Girls Championship Race at 10:20 am.

There are only a few Saturdays of the entire cross-country season that have that combination of great weather, great competition, and a fast course. Today was one of those days at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park and we may have seen times today that forecast what could be ahead for those athletes that show well at the state meet and those that will race beyond the state championships.

The Mobile Challenge of Champions is going to be run this Friday and Saturday in Alabama. This event is typically one of the top meets in the Southeast this early in the season. In fact three of Kentucky’s best performances ever have happened at this meet. Owensboro speedster Casey Combest ran a 10.34 100m Dash in 1999, Jonathan Brown former Union County/Western Kentucky jumper leaped 24-03 in 1999 also, and Andy Fryman of Mason County/University of Kentucky threw 62-10 in the Shot Put in 2003. All three of those performances are Mobile Meet Records. This year looks to be no different with several Kentucky athletes making the trip south to compete.

With a very exciting cross-country season now well behind us, it is time for us to turn our attention fully to the upcoming indoor and outdoor track seasons. We have had several meets already, but the first meet of note in Kentucky will be this weekend at the University of Kentucky’s Nutter Fieldhouse.

Several top-ranked teams and individuals are slated to be in attendance.

She was the KTCCCA 2006 Kentucky Junior Girl Runner of the Year and was named to the Class AAA 1st All-State team. (Picture: Pellegrini crossing the line to win her 1600m State Title)
Interview with duPont Manual teammates Mary Grace Pellegrini and Jennifer Nwachukwu. Pellegrini won the 1600m and 3200m Class AAA titles. Nwachukwu was fourth in the 400m Dash.
On Tuesday of each week, KYtrackXC.com will release the Male and Female “Athlete of the Week” Awardees. This award is based on primarily performances from the past week. Keep in mind, this means that the awards will not necessarily be based on having the best overall performance in the state, but, for example, a big PR for the previous week would make an athlete a candidate. All athletes throughout the state are eligible. The first awardees are Jazzmin Jeter (Ballard) and Jon Erickson (duPont Manual)
Mary Grace Pellegrini leads #2 duPont Manual over #1 Assumption. Gordy Dooley from St. Henry win individually while #2 Trinity takes down #1 Woodford County.
