Early Signs: Who are the State Championship Threats in 3A?

Early Signs: Who are the State Championship Threats in 3A?

With two weeks down, it's time we take a deeper look at the top performers in each class on a team and individual level. August performances are typically slower than what our athletes will be running come championship season, but it gives a nice indication of where things stand right now. To begin, we will look at the Class 1A, 2A, and 3A girls.

*Disclaimer* Assumption has yet to run their Varsity team and will be in the Team title mix as well as having several runners in State Championship contention individually*

Class 3A

Individuals

  1. Addison Moore, Junior, Woodford County

  2. Morgan Kobylinski, Senior, Ohio County

  3. Bailee Montgomery, Junior, Dupont Manual

  4. Shelby Lamb, Junior, Madison Central

  5. Susanne Estepp, Junior,  Paul Laurence Dunbar

When looking at the rankings of the fastest times run this season, you will see that this list is severely misordered, however, it is important to remember that Cross Country isn't always about time. Many times, you must place an importance on placement given that not all courses are created equal. At the top of this list, you will find the defending Class 3A State Champion, Addison Moore. Moore dominated at her meet of the season winning by 25 seconds. She has the fastest PR in the field and should once again be a contender to bring home another Cross Country State Championship. Not to be counted out, however, is Morgan Kobylinski of Ohio County. Kobylinski won the Central Kentucky Run for the Gold and currently has the fastest time in 3A this season. She should be in that lead group come November. Three other names I want to mention are Bailee Montgomery, Shelby Lamb, and Susanne Estepp. Montgomery and Estepp opened their season at Tiger Run where they placed second and third respectively. Lamb, on the other hand, has been a force this season winning the Bourbon County Challenge before placing second to Moore at the Woodford County Invitational. This group should battle it out all fall.

Teams

  1. Dupont Manual

  2. North Oldham

  3. Daviess County

  4. Sacred Heart

  5. Ryle

The Class 3A team race is a jumble of teams with the top 5 separated by just 74 points. First is the always dangerous Dupont Manual who has yet to run Maggie May who ran 18:21 last season. With her addition, Dupont Manual is easily the favorite to bring home the Class 3A state championship. Right behind them, however, is North Oldham who are led by Millie Huang and Elle Cargould. Narrowly behind them, however, is Daviess County who have an incredible 1-5 split of less than 1 minute. In a tight team race, the tight split of the Daviess County athletes could give them the advantage over a team like North Oldham as they vie for a team trophy.
