In June 2010, Washington University in Saint Louis runners Dave Spandorfer and Mike Burnstein came up with the idea for a socially conscious running apparel line that would help support people in need throughout the world. That summer when the duo returned to cross country practice at Wash U, one of their teammates David Hamm, a 2009 duPont Manual graduate heard them talking about their idea. Hamm who had helped design team shirts for Manual in high school in Louisville started talking it over with them and the clothes were born for the company, Janji.
Hamm, currently a senior architecture major has his designs all over Janji. He designs the shorts and shirts and even the company logo based on the flags of Kenya and Haiti. A portion of all sales help to buy a peanut butter high nutrition product for people in Kenya and Haiti.
Hamm, the 2009 Class AAA 3200m Runner-Up said, "It is tough to balance running, school, and designing for Janji, but all three work together in a sense. I am able to apply what I am learning in school to the designs and I can think about the products while running. But most importantly, the work I am doing for Janji gives an even greater sense of purpose to both because I can see their impact in the real world."
