Lexington Catholic Invitational

 

One of the biggest races of the season for the second year in a row was broken into Big and Small Schools races.  The day brought about four thrilling races including a head to head match-up of KYtrackXC.com Class AAA #1 Daviess County versus AAA #2 Trinity.

The first race of the day brought a match-up of KYtrackXC.com Class AA #1 South Oldham senior Jacob Law versus Class A #1 St. Mary junior James Maglasang.  The lead pack at the 2 Mile Mark consisted of Law, Maglasang, Thomas Canary (Lexington Catholic), James Brown (Bell County), Justin Wellum (Portland Christian), and Will Stratford (West Jessamine.)  In the end, the Class AA foes Law and Canary pulled away from the field with Law winning with a time of 16:08.78.  Canary was second with a 16:12.51 and Maglasang was the top Class A runner in third 16:19.37.

The team battle brought an upset with KYtrackXC.com Class A #2 Bishop Brossart winning the team title over Class A #1 St. Henry and Class AA #1 North Oldham.  Brossart was led by the seventh place finish of senior Justin Haire 16:36.38.

KYtrackXC.com Class A #1 Kaitlin Snapp led from the start cruising to victory with her third consecutive Saturday race under 18:40 winning in 18:36.11.  The race spread out quick with a small pack behind Snapp of Maria Frigo (St. Henry), Tenny Ostrem (Powell County), Lily Rodgers (Covington Latin).  Class AA #1 Ostrem went on to finish 2nd with a 19:21.43, Frigo was third with a 19:32.35. 

 

Class A #1 St. Henry won with a team score of 65 points, beating second place Class AA #1 South Oldham by 59 points.

With a top heavy field led by KYtrackXC.com Class AAA #1 Ryan Eaton, and a 1-2 Class AAA showdown between Daviess County and Trinity this race looked to be great one coming into Saturday.  Individual wise Eaton won 15:54.93 running with a consistent lead most of the race.  Justin House (Apollo) led the next pack in second with a 16:03.82. 

 

Daviess County senior Landon Taylor crossed the line in third with a 16:05.63, walked down the chute turned around to see his fellow Panther teammates cross the line as a pack of four in places ninth (Brett Dickens), tenth (Wes Russelburg), eleventh (Evan Ehrehheim, and twelfth (Brett Dickens).  Daviess County verified they were a deserving #1 with a team score of 45 points.  Class AAA #2 Trinity finished as runner-up with 86 points, led by sophomore Jake Wildenmann, fifth place, 16:22.70 and senior Brian Hancock, eighth place, 16:37.19.  Class AAA #8 Trinity senior Alex Dadds did not run on Saturday.

The only real surprises of the day came in the Large School Girls race as Ryle sophomore led from the start and crossed the line in first with a time of 19:22.39.  John Hardin junior Maggie Mattingly was tracking her down at the end but came up short finishing second with a time of 19:26.99.  Daviess County senior Elizabeth Miller and Shelby County freshmen Caterina Karas finished third 19:33.35 and fourth 19:38.01.  

 

The next surprise was in the team battle, #6 duPont Manual brought the heat placing five girls in the top 20 to win with a team score of 63. over #3 Eastern and #4 Daviess County.  Manual was led by Elizabeth Anderson’s fifth place finish 19:58.45
