KY Milesplit Year in Review: What Happened in 2023?

2023 Kentucky Milesplit: Year in Review

We begin our journey of the 2023 KY Milesplit season with Indoor Track and Field. The 2024 indoor season will be here in two weeks, and it is the first Indoor season in Kentucky history that will consist of KHSAA Indoor State Championships. This will provide a gorgeous preview of what the 2024 Outdoor Season will show us, but more on that in 2024. In 2023, we witnessed legendary Indoor track performances that made our jaws drop. To begin, Will Sheets, Junior, from Covington Catholic ran a 14:51.42 Indoor 5000m which is the fastest in Kentucky State History. This was an obscure feat as the Indoor State Championships will only consist of either the 3000m or the 3200m and not a 5000m. Either way, this time was impressive. Moving towards more "Normal" track events, Sophia Richter, Senior, from Eastern High School ran the fastest Indoor 400m time in Kentucky history posting a mark of 55.79. This time was just .3 seconds away from her State Championship run during the Outdoor season. Finally, we move to distance as Ciara O'Shea, Senior, from Madison Central broke every time barrier you could think of at the distance levels. O'Shea ran the fastest 1500m/1-mile races in Kentucky State History running 4:26.05 and 4:44.41 respectively. She also repeated this for the 3000m/2-mile distances running 9:30.84 and 10:12.24. With all that said, it is time to hand out some Indoor season awards. For the Indoor awards, we will be awarding an award for the "Most Outstanding Performance" for both boys and girls.
