Region 6
Site (host): Ashland (Boyd County)
BOYS
The top challengers:
1. Mason Newsome. The No. 1 in a 1-2 punch at the top for Boyd County, Newsome posted his PR at the Area 7 Championship. He ran 16:13.79, the second time he broke 17 minutes in his career (the first was in the season's first meet). The junior was the highest-finishing underclassman here last year, coming in fifth.
2. Ayden Riddle. The freshman's seed time (16:39.18) also came in this year's Area 7 Championship, and was his first time running under 17 minutes. He'll make his region debut on Saturday.
3. Cody Brown. Stop me if you've heard this one - his PR (16:42.99) was earned at the Area 7 Championship on Oct. 8. That was slightly improved from his prior best; the Greenup County junior ran 16:44.30 in the Ashland Tomcat Invitational on Sept. 13. He was seventh here last season.
Fast facts: The next best returning finisher after Newsome is teammate Hudson Cox, who's seeded fourth for the Lions (16:49.62). Rolen Sanderson (16:58.13) rounds out a fearsome foursome in the top seven seeds for Boyd County.
GIRLS
The top challengers:
1. Autumn Egleston. The Area 7 Championship wasn't just good for boys in Region 6; Egleston, a junior at Rowan County, ran a career-best 18:38.77 to win the girls' race. That was the third best time by any girl in Class 2A this season. She ran fourth here last season (19:09.99).
2. Paige Decker. Her PR (18:50.60) came while in eighth grade, but the Mason County star approached it at - you guessed it - the Area 7 Championship; two weekends ago she ran 18:54.71, the fourth fastest time in Class 2A. She finished fifth in the region last season.
3. Sami Govey. A Boyd County freshman, Govey PR'd in the regional last season (18:50.68) to finish second, making her the fastest returnee from last year's field. She owns the third fastest time in the region this season (19:21.69).
Fast facts: Layla Henderson, a Mason County senior who finished third last year, is seeded fourth with a PR of 19:01.85. She hasn't run under 20 minutes this fall.
