The girls cross country season has begun and the youngsters are dominating the top performances.

The senior girls are ready to end their high school careers as their best season to date. Who has the lead before we even run one race in the 2018 XC season?

A great indicator of what is to come for the upcoming cross country season is the performance of the athletes in the spring track season. Let's take a look at each returning 5K runner and their best performances of the outdoor season in the 3200m, 1600m, and 800m.

The usual names top this list, including the current US #9 indoor from Rockcastle County.

Mercer County hosted its second meet of the week in order to give teams a chance to run on the course that will host the regional championship. Teams from Regions 7A, 7AA, and 7AAA were present this morning and they all hoped to not only gain some valuable experience but to also post some fast times on a challenging course. 

Class A, AA, & AAA Mid-Season Recaps

In only its second year of existence, the Bluegrass Cross Country invitational has already earned a reputation. Notable for fast times, strong competition, and hotly debated validity (more on that in a minute) this was a meet I’ve had on my coverage radar for some time. Last year’s meet saw a battle down to the wire between John Spencer of Lafayette and Eric Baugh of Villa Madonna with both PRing in the mid-to-low 15’s. This year was hoping to produce more of the same, adding several more to the “sub-16” club. To ensure legitimacy of the course Coach Hawboldt of Tates Creek confirmed that no less than 3 separate entities measured the course: The University of Kentucky, Lindburgh High School (St. Louis MO), and himself. Each gave measurements within 1% accuracy of 5000m.

Madison County teams shined at the 2013 KHSAA Super Regional at Wayne County’s Cave Lake Park, as Madison Central and Berea swept their divisions. The host Cardinals and Boyle County split titles in Class AA.
