EASTERN RELAYS PRESENTED BY PRIMAL SPORT MUD

 

The Eastern Relays, annually the top producer of times, throws, and jumps in the state of Kentucky.  It is common place especially in Kentucky that the best show up at the University of Louisville to compete at the end of April.  Teams come from every state that connects to the state to compete as well. But let's take a second to go back to the year 2005, the 1st year of KYtrackXC.com.  

Under the old KYtrackXC.com Elite Performance System there were 132 elites that year with only 3 being strong enough to hit the MileSplit US National Elite level. (only the athletes who hit a certain standard had times added to their athlete pages ex. 11.44 100m, 4:45 1600m)  The meet was very solid with mainly Louisville area squads showing up along with a few out of town teams. The next year saw the first out of state teams show up (OH & IN) and the performances went up (8 National, 172 KYtrackXC Elite).  2007 saw 10 National and 264 KYtrackXC Elite.)  The meet has not slowed down due to hard work of Coach Mike Horan and his staff and 2013 showed it big time busting out 140 National Elites and a whopping 892 KYtrackXC Elites.   

A perfect example of the amazing growth is the Boys 3200m Run.  In 2005 Greenwood junior Michael Eaton showed up and won with a 9:44.12 beating St. Xavier's sophomore Brian Long's time of 9:50.55.  The only other runner under 10 flat was Thomas Davis with a 9:58.89.  None of these three were chumps either.  Eaton (Foot Locker South Champ) and Long were both sub 14 5K runners in college.  Davis was a 4:18 miler his senior year at St. X.  

Now lets compare the work done in 2005 to the Eastern Relays current history.  Eaton stands as the 50th best runner overall with his 9:44.12.  His time would have been 30th overall in 2013 and 21st in 2012.  2012 saw Jacob Thomson run an 8:58.62 to win with three other top runners right behind him all under 9:03.  Before anyone starts saying that the depth of the race helps the times, that is very true and Eaton would have been right there with Thomson if that same race was run in 2005. The point is that the Eastern Relays has become this place where many of the best in Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, and West Virginia annually converge for a huge Elite performance festival. 

 

The 2014 Eastern Relays will be held on April 25th and 26th at the University of Louisville.
