Since its inception, the KYtrackXC.com 5K Showdown has served as one of the premier early season tests for distance runners across Kentucky. Year after year, it has produced elite level performances that not only set the tone for the outdoor season but also etch athletes into the state's distance running lore.
With the 2026 edition now in the books, the all time lists on both the boys and girls sides have been reshaped, highlighted by a historic performance at the very top.
Boys
At the front of the all-time list stands Paul Van Laningham, whose blistering 14:14.07 this year didn't just win the race, it redefined what's possible at the KYtrackXC 5K Showdown. His performance shaved significant time off a list already loaded with elite names and instantly became one of the fastest 5K marks ever run by a Kentucky high school athlete.
Behind him sits a collection of distance standouts who have gone on to collegiate, and in some cases professional success. Jacob Thomson held the top spot for years with his 14:49.75, while Yared Nuguse, now widely known on the national and international stage, clocked 14:51.74 during his high school career.
The 2021 edition of the meet proved especially deep, placing two athletes in the top five: Will Cahill (14:53.09) and Theo Bachmann (14:54.50). That same level of excellence continues throughout the list with names like James Ndayishimiye (14:55.89) , Patrick Gregory (14:57.96), and Austin Mathews (14:59.16) all dipping under the 15-minute barrier.
Rounding out the top 10 are Trevor Warren (15:02.86) and Philip Lamartiniere (15:03.30), emphasizing just how deep and competitive the event has been across multiple eras.
What stands out most is the progression: what once won the meet comfortably now barely cracks the top 10. The bar has been raised-and then raised again.

Girls
On the girls side, Michaela Reinhart still holds the top spot with her outstanding 17:05.09 from 2017, a mark that has proven incredibly resilient over time. Her performance remains the benchmark for excellence at the KYtrackXC 5K Showdown.
Close behind is Kaitlyn Lacy at 17:21.70, followed by Tula Fawbush, whose 17:27.52 reflects the continued emergence of elite talent in recent years.
One of the biggest storylines from this year's edition came from Elle Cargould, who surged to 17:33.72, placing her fourth all time. Her performance signals that Reinhart's long-standing record may soon be under serious threat.
The depth of the list is equally impressive. Athletes like Margaret Allen (17:35.53), Ciara O'Shea (17:42.22), and Whitney O'Bryan (17:47.52) have all delivered standout performances that would headline most meets.
More recent additions such as Flora Biro (17:47.82) and Brianna Wolken (17:59.67) round out a list that blends multiple generations of excellence, while Gabby Karas (17:50.73) hangs onto the top 10 with her sub-18 effort in 2013.
