VHSL Group 5A
In a very fortuitous turn of events it is Deep Run's girls team that is favored as the team champions going into this state meet. If you remember it was their boys team last year ultimately hoisting the trophy up. This year though it is the depth of their girls team and the immergence of Margot Brown that has propelled them to the top of our virtual meet, just ahead of Emma Wolcott (top seed) and her Tuscarora teammates. Individually though it is going to be a very close race. Leading the way on paper is Emma Wolcott but she just lost last week to freshman sensation Heather Holt of George C. Marshall by roughly 20 seconds in regional competition. For anyone who has seen them race, they know that the Holt twins are definitely coming to win this weekend. Doria Martingayle and Margot Brown will also very much be in contention.
On the boys side of the things it is Deep Run's Matthew Novak leading the way individually. Zach Gentry (Albemarle) and Tre Fields (Atlee) follow close behind him to make this race very interesting. Team wise it looks like the Rebels of Douglas Freeman are the favorites coming into the meet with Manchester close behind. Though Manchester is separated by 60 points right now on paper, all it takes is one individual to have a big pr or one Freeman runner to drop back for a major point swing to happen.
