KY Boys Performance of the Week (10/14 - 10/20)
During the final week before Region Championships, we saw several marquee races before closing it with the KTCCCA Championships on Sunday where several of our athletes got a chance to see the State course. With that said, here are the candidates for Performance of the week.
The first nominee is Riku Sugie of Thomas Nelson. The Senior finally had a race up to his lofty standards dominating the Mid Kentucky Athletic Conference with a 52 second win. Sugie's 14:50 is the second fastest time in the State this season. All signs are currently pointing to one of the greatest showdowns we have seen at the State meet with both Sheets and Sugie peaking at the right time.
The second nominee is Caden Cull of Male. Cull has been sitting around 16:00 all season this year, but finally had a massive breakthrough. The senior ran 15:13, winning the Yared Nuguse JCPS Championships. Cull is looking to throw his name into the individual title race at State here in two weeks.
The third nominee is Easton Bourland of Dawson Springs. Bourland won the Eagle Classic this Saturday with an impressive 16:35.
The fourth nominee is Paul Van Laningham. The Junior from Cooper has been on a tear this season, running 15:02 earlier in the year and just barely losing to Sheets two weeks ago. In a race that proved to be more of a state course preview than marquee event, Laningham cruised to a 16:40 and a victory on the State course at the KTCCCA Meet of Champions. Could that be a sign of what's to come in 2 weeks?
