The 24th edition of the Hillbilly Run is set for this weekend in Bardstown. While this writer is skeptical of the race's nomenclature - Nelson County's got a lot of bourbon, but is light on mountains - it should be no less fun for the participants as fall weather sets in.

Rising star Riku Sugie is the clear frontrunner in the boys' 5K. A sophomore at Thomas Nelson, Sugie has finished no lower than sixth in three races this season and is coming off a fourth-place showing in the loaded Trinity/Valkyrie Invitational. He ran a PR last weekend - 15:17.20, the third fastest time in the state this season - and has been sub-15:43 in his last four races dating back to last year. For perspective: his time last week at the Trinity/Valkyrie was more than a full minute faster than his effort in the same race last year. He ran 16:38.38 (sixth) in this event in 2021; expect something much faster on Saturday.
