Northern Kentucky Brings the Best Returning 1A XC Squads

Class 1A Girls Top 5 Teams

#1: Bishop Brossart

The ladies from Brossart took home the team title in 2020 with a 70 point victory 36-76 over Kentucky Country Day and they return EVERY SINGLE RUNNER from that team. Led by Claire Curtsinger (1), Amy Klocke (2), Sadie Hartig (3) and Olivia Holbrook (7), this seems like a foregone conclusion. And they are not done! Curtsinger is the only senior in 2021. They continued their tear through the stat with a team championship in track as well with the top 4x800m team, two of the top three finishers in the 1600m and 3200m, then topped it off with a 4x400m relay championship. These girls will be a tough group to beat!

Class 1A Girls 2020 KHSAA State Meet

#2: Lexington Christian

Lexington Christian comes into the 2021 season having left something on the table at the state cross country meet in 2020. They placed 4th without their top runner, Anna Rupp. Coming into the state meet, she was leading the team in time and even won the regional meet. Even without Rupp, LCA earned a top 4 team finish led by junior Tia Alchureiqi and a trio of underclassmen. In 2021, this team could easily challenge for the second-place spot and the future is bright. Aside from Alchureiqi, the state team was comprised of Annie Sewell (7th), Hadley Bronski (9th), Emma Clare Doepke (9th), and Annalise Randles (7th) in 2020. Keep a close eye on this group.

#3: Villa Madonna

Pack running was on display by Villa Madonna in 2020 and therefore brought home a third-place team finish. The season-best split from 1 to 5 was 1:21.60 in 2020 which is the best of the returning squads. They put that work on display on the state course with a 1 to 5 split of 1:03.10. All five runners from that scoring team return for 2021. Once again, youth is the name of the game with the top two runners, Charlie Gerrein (9th) and Alyssa Martin (8th), lead the way in 2021 with a trio of seniors rounding out the scoring.

#4: Kentucky Country Day

The Bearcats of Kentucky Country Day had a banner year in 2020 with a team runner-up finish at the state cross country championships. Led by the 5th place finish of Haley Schoenegge and a strong group behind her, these girls showed their potential. Fast forward to track season and Schoenegge took home a state title in the 3200m showing that she is ready for the upcoming cross country season. Maddox Miller, Andrea Rice, Emily Hollon, and Emory Garlove rounded out the state meet scoring in 2020 and, with the exception of Garlove, will be returning in 2021. This will be the most veteran team, in terms of grade level, in the top echelon. So, will experience and age give them a boost back to the top 2? Time will tell.

#5: Brown

I am going to be completely honest on this one. Brown was not on my radar at all as a team competing for a top 5 spot at the 2021 state meet. This is partly due to the fact that they did not have a scoring team in 2020 despite all of their team is a returning runner in 2021. Looking back at the 2020 state meet, it appears as if their top two runners, Taylor Morris and Trista Morris, did not compete at the state meet. Nevertheless, this is a team that could certainly do some things in 2021 with a full squad. Every runner from their 2020 state performance will be back and assuming the addition of the aforementioned Morris runners, this could be a special season.
