Senior Sendoff: Connor Martin - Corbin

Athlete NameConnor Martin

School: Corbin

What was your most memorable meet and why?
My
most memorable meet was SEKC my sophomore year. I was in second place the whole race, on pace for a PR. I made the last turn before the end of the race and i started my kick, I was about 400 meters out and was slowly catching the guy ahead of me. Finally, right before we crossed the line I passed by him, winning SEKC that year and getting a new PR.

Where did you face your biggest competition?
Our
region race my senior year, being able to compete with last years champions, with hopes of winning.

Out of all your high school accomplishments which stands out the most and why?
My
biggest accomplishment, out of my teams first place trophies and region runner up title, I still think my biggest accomplishment is being able to educate and mentor the next generations of Corbin Cross Country. Seeing how much they've not only matured as runners, but people and knowing i got to play a part in that.

If you could do it all over again what would you change about your running career in high schools?

I would have tried harder in the off seasons. I allowed myself to get lazy and complacent and I just wish I could go back and train harder so that we could have ended my senior year winning our region.

What were the most difficult obstacle you had to overcome?
The
biggest obstacle was myself. Every time i wanted to quit, every time I crossed the line having more in the tank, and looking back, knowing i didn't reach my full potential.

What will you miss the most?
I
am really torn on what I'll miss the most! It'd probably be the memories the team and would make on every run, every practice, and even every time we hung out outside of practice. They're really my family and I can't see myself not running with them everyday. But also, I will miss the competitiveness of every race, striving to be the best and overcoming the trials of each practice and race.

Do you have any advice for the younger athletes?
Yes,
don't be your own worst enemy. When it gets hard, get stronger and persevere when it seems to be the hardest. Always know there's more in the tank and you don't want to ever look back knowing you didn't give it your all.

What are your post-high school or college plans?
My
plans as I open this new chapter in my life is to study nursing and philosophy. Utilizing my nursing degree to travel overseas to other countries in need and help them anyway i can. Hopefully leading some medical missions too.

Who would you like to say thank you to?
My
dad, my mom, my sister, Coach Harris, Coach G, Coach Tommy, my amazing team that pushed me everyday, and all my other friends and family that supported me through this grueling and amazing running career.
