WKU’S RAMSEY, BAILEY AND GUERRA RECEIVE SBC ATHLETE OF THE WEEK HONORS
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – WKU’s dominant performances at last weekend’s Florida Relays has led to three Sun Belt Conference Track and Field Athletes of the Week for the Hilltoppers and Lady Toppers, with Jessica Ramsey, Elvyonn Bailey and Tomas Guerra all picking up league honors Wednesday.
Ramsey, a senior thrower, shattered the Sun Belt Conference and WKU record in the shot put last weekend with a heave of 55-feet-7 inches (16.94m). Ramsey’s toss ranks third in the NCAA this season, broke the league record by more than a foot and broke her own school record by more than three feet. Her throw was more than two feet longer than the next closest college competitor at the Florida Relays and leads the Sun Belt by over three feet.
Ramsey was named the Sun Belt Conference Female Field Athlete of the Week four-straight weeks during the indoor season after setting league and school records earlier this spring. This week’s recognition brings her career total to five.
Bailey, a senior sprinter, was named the Sun Belt Conference Male Track Athlete of the Week after turning in the nation’s 13thfastest 400-meter dash time at the Florida Relays. His 46.66 second-clocking was a season-best and placed him eighth among the elite field of collegiate runners. Bailey, who is the three-time defending league champion in the 400-meter dash, ranks first this outdoor season after his performance. The league award marks the third of Bailey’s career and first this outdoor season.
Guerra, a sophomore javelin thrower, was tabbed the Sun Belt Conference Male Field Athlete of the Week after turning in a third-place showing at the Florida Relays with a javelin throw of 223-feet-4 inches. Guerra’s throw was his second-longest toss this season, as his 226-foot-3 inch throw at the Texas Relays ranks 18th in the NCAA this season. This marks the first time in Guerra’s career that he has picked up a weekly award from the league.
