It was a Bear vs. Cougar fight at the 2013 Area 9 Meet at Harlan County High School on Oct. 19, as the host Black Bears battled Letcher Central for mountain supremacy. The end result after the varsity races was a draw, with the two teams alternating titles.
It was their host meet but not their home course, but the Pulaski boys didn’t care, as they won the varsity title at the 41st annual Pulaski County Invitational, held Oct. 12 at Cave Lake in Wayne County. The Ryle Lady Raiders made the long trip south and claimed the girls’ crown.
The Letcher County Central Cougars were as hot as the unseasonably warm temperatures at the Chuck Vitatoe Invitational on October 5, as the Cougars and Lady Cougars claimed both varsity titles at the event hosted by Harlan County High School.
The Madison Central Indians and Lady Indians took advantage of a beautiful day on a beautiful course at Cave Lake by sweeping the Varsity titles at the Wayne County Invitational on September 28. The team also took titles in the Boys Middle School and Junior Varsity races.
Recap of the action at the Southern Harrier Classic
It was a case of “déjà vu all over again” at the Region 7 Class AA meet as the Letcher County Central boys and the Harlan County girls took the titles in their respective divisions, while the teams reversed those results in the runner-up spots. Teams from those schools finished the same way at the Area 9 meet on the same course at Harlan County three weeks ago.
The Harlan County Black Bears tore through the Corbin Invitational on October 20, snagging the hardware in nearly every team category.
The Letcher County Central boys and the host Harlan County girls snagged team hardware at the Chuck Vitatoe Classic on Oct. 6, while a pair of Bell County runners claimed the individual titles and course records.
Madison Central made it two in a row as they dominated the varsity races at the North Laurel Invitational in London on Sept. 29.
