Felecia Majors and the rest of her South County teammates traveled southbound this past weekend while on spring break to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and competed in the Beach Run Invitational. It turned out that Majors and South County were not only on vacation time while down in Myrtle Beach, but getting fast times as well. Majors dominated the meet in numerous events just like she does almost every weekend back home in Virginia including wins in the pole vault (11'0") and long jump (19'6"), but in particular, Majors really took it up a notch on the track with the fastest performances that we have ever seen from her.

Northwestern recruit Hannah Rose of Wilson Memorial has won two state titles in cross country, but would like to finish with more than one state title in track with her 3200 meter state meet victory last June. Rose has the best returning 1600 meter time in Group A by 14 seconds with her 5:10 personal best, while her 10:50 best in the 3200 puts  her at a whopping time difference of over a minute and a half from closest competition currently in her classification.

This past year, Virginia High School junior Nikolas Huffman became more than just an emerging great discus thrower in Virginia. Huffman transformed himself into an elite performer in the shot put as well as recently capped off a year of growth with breaking a 30 year old Group A State Championship meet record in the shot with a personal best mark of 58'8.50". Coached by his father, a throws coach and former thrower himself in the 1980s at Virginia High School, Huffman has become a full-time thrower and spent the winter months finding meets which he can compete at. During the winter, he got the opportunity to try the weight throw which is the sister event of the outdoor throws event in the hammer throw. At the Volunteer Track Classic in Tennessee in mid-April, Huffman was an impressive runner-up finisher in the hammer despite limited competition experience with a throw of 186'8". The discus is still his original and current specialty as he repeated as Group A state champion in the event and improved his personal best this season to 181'1" to establish himself as the third ranked performer in Virginia regardless of classification. MileStat.com interviewed the Group A three-time throws state champion Huffman as he prepares for the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, which he is qualified and competing in the championship divisions of three throwing events (shot, discus, hammer).

At Radford University this past Saturday, the Stonewall Jackson boys ran away with the Group A state track championship team title led by two individual stars, while a well-rounded James River girls' team were able to pull out a last second victory in the 4x400 meter relay over a formidable Strasburg squad by 5 points. The 2012 edition of the Group A State Track & Field Championships witnessed three meet records going down including one meet benchmark which had lasted for an incredible 3 decades.

Photo by John Herzog   A handful of Virginia schools are competing this weekend at the Volunteer Track Classic in Knoxville, Tennessee. One of the leading performances by Virginians in Friday's events was the Lee-Davis girls setting a new meet record by three seconds in the 4x100 meter shuttle hurdles with one of the faster times in state history in the event at 1:02.71. The relay featured state indoor 55 hurdles champion Montasia Golden as well as another state qualifier caliber hurdler in Brie Jackson.   In the rarely contested 2000 meter steeplechase, two Blacksburg seniors placed well with quality times in Sarah Dorrell (7:34.02) and Frank Locascio (6:23.65) both placing third respectively. The hammer throw is just as uncommon event as the steeplechase for Virginia high schoolers, but Virginia High School's Nik Huffman impressed in his event debut with a mark of 166'3", which will rank the sophomore and returning Group A state discus runner-up among the top 15 nationally.   Volunteer Track Classic - Friday Results
