Plenty of things to look at, so let's get moving with the analysis.
Region 1A
Fort Campbell's boys start their march towards what appears to an inevitable showdown between them and Louisville Holy Cross to decide the Boys Class A state championship next Friday. With plenty of depth in the sprints and the field events, FC will be focused on having a clean regional and getting enough of their talent qualified to have some options to choose from next weekend.
Region 3A
Bardstown will always field competitive squads that show extremely well when the postseason comes, but the focal point in this regional this year is the contingent from Louisville Holy Cross. Distance standout Jacob Thomson leads the charge for a very balanced group that has strength in the hurdles, field events, and in the distance events. Thomson in particular is making a run at the distance quadruple and will need to survive this weekend to get himself qualified for the main event in all four events next weekend.
Region 5A
Lexington Christian brings strong groups into this region on both sides, but it is the contingent of ladies from Sayre that has people talking in what might be one of the more competitive regionals on both sides. Ann Eason is also making a run at the distance quadruple and has as strong a chance to pull it off as Thomson does with the way she has dominated the competition thus far. Bea Cameron and Maddox Patterson will both be big parts of the puzzle for this group as they look to challenge for the Class A state championship as well.
Region 6A
After Model's girls have been a power in this region for close to ten years, but it is the crew from Somerset that looks to be dominating the competition this year. Especially impressive is the sprint contingent that Somerset has put together, so watch for Akisha Kirkpatrick and Maranda Mills to do plenty of damage along with their teammates today.
Region 3AA
North Oldham's boys start their charge for a state title today as well, and be wary of Zach Evans as he is the centerpiece of the whole operation for the Mustang faithful. Central's girls had such a strong week last week that they may just have enough to be competitive with Highlands for the Class AA state title next week, and we will see if they can qualify enough depth to make it interesting today.
Region 7AAA
Emily Frith of Lincoln County headlines the entries on the girls side in this region as she is entered in both the 1600 and 3200. On the boys' side, Madison Central could really turn some heads and they are headlined by newly crowned middle school state champion Damien Harris and a very strong sprint crew.
It should be an exciting day of competition through the cold and rain for sure.
