Interview with Michael Eaton

1) What are your goals for the 2005 Cross Country Season? Are you planning a return trip to San Diego for the Footlocker Nationals?

I have a few goals for this season. One is I want to break 15 minutes in the 5k. Also I\'d like to repeat last year\'s performance at state. As for Footlocker I want to go back to San Diego and hopefully make All-American, which is given to the top 15 in that race.

2) What was the expeirence in San Diego like last December?

My experience in San Diego was incredible, not only did I get a chance to run against the best high school runners in the country, I also got to meet some professional runners, like Daniel Lincoln and Meb Kelfezighi, while I was out there.

3) Since you just returned from running camp, how did that go?

Running camp was great. I went to Roy Benson\'s Smokey Mountain running camp. I love
running on the trails and in the woods. The weather there was pretty good most of
the week, I got in some really good mileage, and had a pretty awesome time while I was there.

4) What kind of training have you been doing this summer?

I\'ve pretty much been doing base mileage, like I do every summer. Really the only difference is I\'ve bumped up the mileage and increased the pace a little. I\'ve done a few hill workouts, but nothing too hard, no reason to wear myself out too early in the season.

5) Is there any race in particular you are looking foward to this season?

Well I usually look forward to sunning at Senica Park, but I hear that St. X isn\'t having their race there this year, so I\'d have to say I\'m looking forward to Trinity\'s race and running at Tom Sawyer Park, I like that course, it requires some strength to handle the hills.

6) What do you think about Greenwood\'s chances at region and state this season? You all have a strong duo (Midgett, Settle) to go along with yourself.

I think we\'ve got a pretty good shot this year. Drake and Nate are really working hard and we\'ve got a few new runners, Corey Welsh and Colin Wheeler, who I believe can be right up there with them. How well we do will really depend on how hard we want to work, we stand a chance of being really good, but only if we put in the effort.

7) Don\'t you have a younger brother starting high school this year, is he going to continue the winning tradition you have set for the Eaton family?

Actually, Ryan, my younger brother is only going to be an 8th grader this year. But he\'s growing like crazy and I think he\'s got a good shot at being in our top 7 if he works at it. He\'s already in the 19\'s and the season really hasn\'t even started yet. I think he\'ll be down in the 18\'s before the season is over. If he works hard, I could see him carrying on the winning tradition, or at least being a front runner in a few years.

8) Are there any certain colleges you are looking at?

I\'m trying to keep my options open for colleges, but I\'ve looked at a few, Louisville, UK, NC State, and a few others. Really it depends on where I feel the most comfortable and what I want to do with my life after running. The team dynamics have to be there, but I also want a coach who individualizes the workouts, so that it helps me improve as well.
