Class AA Kentucky State Meet Recap: Cold Wind and Sleet Edition

Class AA Girls

Powell County senior Tenny Ostrem went out to the front of this race and led for the majority of the distance. South Oldham sophomore Jessie Murner tracked her down step by step, eventually passing Ostrem in the last half mile of the race. Murner ended up crossing the line in first with a time of 19:40.74. Ostrem held on for second with a 19:54.42. North Oldham’s Catilin Beyea finished in third with a time of 20:00.05. South Oldham’s second runner Kacie Niemann crossed in fourth with a 20:01.12.

The 1-2 combo of Murner and Niemann was too much for any team to handle as South Oldham won the 2008 Class AA Girls State Title with a team score of 85 points. Lloyd Memorial finished in second with a score of 105 led by sixth place Courtney Siefert and tenth place Elisha Overpeck.

Class AA Boys

The three individual favorites went to the front and stayed there, Jacob Law (South Oldham), Thomas Canary (Lexington Catholic), and Daniel Thurston (Western Hills.) Law led from the start pushing the pace with Canary and Thurston chasing behind them with Taylor Sanders (North Oldham) right on the heels of Thurston. As Law peaked the top of the final hill it was clear, Thomas Canary was not close enough to use his State Record 800m speed. Law crossed the line in 16:12.61 to win his first state title. He joins Daniel Murner as the second South Oldham runner to win a Class AA individual title. Canary ended up second with a 16:20.51. Thurston edged Sanders with a 16:27.94.

Coming into the Class AA State Championship, KYtrackXC.com projected four teams has having a possibility of winning the State Team Title. North Oldham placed three runners in the top 15, Sanders 4^th 16:28.80, Justin Roenigk 11^th 16:55.69 and Colin Grandon 14^th 17:01.08 to win the Schools first Kentucky State Cross Country Championship. Calloway County was second led by Daniel Hopkins in 9^th 16:52.74. South Oldham was third led by Law in 1^st. West Jessamine snuck into the top four led by Will Stratford. The point differential between 2^nd Calloway County and 4^th West Jessamine was 2 points. Calloway 140, South Oldham 141, and West Jessamine 142, when your coach tells you every runner counts this is PROOF.
