On a typical Saturday, a cross country runner knows what to expect, a certain regular routine. Get  up, get ready, and head out for the meet.  Run your race and head home. Sometimes, though, random things happen that no one can really prepare for.

Today at the North Oldham Rumble Through the Jungle, the title of the race became a kind of omen. As one of the athletes ran through the woods, she came across the wildlife. The young lady was in the middle school race and a deer physically ran into her just before the one mile mark in the 3000 Meter Run. Three other runners, one a teammate and two from a rival school, stopped to help the young runner off the course, essentially sacrificing their own races to help their fellow runner.

This is just another example of what makes XC both interesting (dodging deer) and AWESOME (great sportsmanship.)

Next time you are out a XC meet, watch out the deer are coming for you.

(Update: I have been in contact with the runner's coach. They do not believe it is a major injury. Well wishes for a speedy recovery go out to her.)
