WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships concluded Saturday after two full days of racing in Winston-Salem, N.C. Seniors Robert Sandlin, Jr. and Seth Sigler, and junior Emily Frith represented Bellarmine well at nationals, with Sandlin earning All-America honors after a fourth-place finish in the men's 1 mile run.
After qualifying for the men's finals in the 1 mile run with the second fastest time in the prelims, Sandlin raced to a fourth place finals finish with a time of 4:12.22, earning five points for Bellarmine as a team and, in the process, earning All-America status with his top-eight finish. With his result at nationals, Sandlin adds even more accolades to his already impressive year. The senior clocked the third fastest Division II mile time (4:01.20) this year at the prestigious "Meyo" mile on February 8 and finished 13th in the USA Track & Field Indoor National Championship 1500 meter run alongside a number of professional runners.
Also in Saturday's action, Frith competed in the women's 3000 meter run and finished in 10th place with a time of 9:54.79. On day one of the Championships, Frith finished in ninth place in the 5000 meter run, clocking a time of 17:16.49. Frith broke the school record in the 3000 meter on February 15th when she ran it in 9:50.95 at the Grand Valley Big Meet, and both her career-best 3000 meter and 5000 meter times are best in the conference this year.
Seth Sigler was unable to qualify for the finals in the men's 60 meter hurdles after a 14th place finish in the preliminaries, crossing the finish line in 8.10 seconds. His time matched the mark he set at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship preliminaries two weeks ago, which is the top GLVC time this year.
St. Augustine's University, located in Raleigh, N.C. won the men's NCAA Div. II national championship after posting 84.5 points over the two days of competition. The title is their 34th. Adams State won the women's NCAA championship with 67 points.
Bellarmine will open their outdoor track and field season on Friday, March 28 in Atlanta, Ga. at the two-day Emory Classic located at Emory University.
