Team Action

South Oldham looked like they might be head and shoulders above the rest with the crew they returned after last year’s state title effort, and they looked like it taking 6th overall at Tiger Run Saturday. #9 CAL was a big surprise getting up for seventh without the efforts of Dria Stallings to support their team score as they dominated both #3 Presentation and #6 North Oldham. Several crews claimed second this weekend including #5 Lloyd Memorial, without Courtney Siefert, #7 Bell County, and #8 Union County, at Holmes, Southwestern, and Heath, respectively. Highlands took advantage of Siefert not competing to take a tight decision over Lloyd Memorial at Holmes and may be cracking the rankings next week. Spencer County, which is commonly supported by middle school athletes, didn’t field a full varsity team at Tiger Run.

Top Individuals

Individually, Casey Richarson of Presentation looked impressive claiming 10th at Tiger Run, while South Oldham teammates, Hannah Ellis and Jessie Murner, also looked strong placing 12th and 14th, respectively. Lloyd Memorial’s Elisha Overpeck claimed a win at Holmes to open her season up, as did Kelsey McCain of Pendleton County at her home invitiational. Lauren Parrish of Union County placed 2nd at Heath and Rockcastle County’s Laura Dollins placed 3rd at the Roll Back the Entry Fee Invitational.

Team Action

North Oldham looked human, and they lost to a Class AA team, Covington Catholic, for the first time in a year at Tiger Run. South Oldham also looked strong at Tiger Run and appears to be a solid fifth runner away from breaking into the top 2. Pendleton took second at their home invite, but with the difficulty of the course, it is hard to draw any conclusions there. Knox Central looks like they are working with a group of five to carry them right now, while CAL looks like they are strong through three, but need some work to improve their 4-5. Highlands took 4th at the Holmes Licking River Run, splitting just 40 seconds between the 1-5, while Calloway showed the talent they brought back from last year’s state runners-up is still there, but they have plenty of work to do in order to get a number 5 solidified.

Top Individuals

Individually, Robert Sandlin opened up the season at Tiger Run, placing fourth, and looks to be the clear favorite right now, as Daniel Thurston of Western Hills, pulled up lame in the same race. Last year’s fourth place runner Taylor Sanders looked very human in his season opener, while Haile Jemane of Central and Stephen Schwab of Covington Catholic had very solid runs that surprised many across the state. Ryan Thurman of Calloway brought home a win to start the season, as did Joey Landrum of Lloyd Memorial, Tanner Alexander of Russell, and James Brown of Bell County.
