A Tribute to the JV Runner

Each year there are members of the the team that do not get to consistently run at the varsity level, however their role on the team can be just as important as the #1 runner.

During my time as a coach, I found that the impact your lesser known runners had on the team was far more profound than the low score posted by the top runner. There were those times when your top runner also filled the role on your team as well and those were the special groups that went the farthest in the postseason.

I still remember my first group of runners and a set of identical triplets that were the rock of our team. Adam, Ben, and Cameron were fiercely loyal and positive role models to all member of the team. Were they the fastest runners on the team, no. Their impact was not the time they posted on Saturday's, rather the lifelong work they did to shape young teens into successful adults. This is not to discount the many runners that I coached in my tenure. Each and every one of them had an impact on me as person.

Every team has "that runner" that makes that change on the team that every coach is looking for. So, spread this article and tag those athletes on social media that made that impact for your team. Who was that catalyst for positivity that the team just could not do without?

With that being the setting, check out the top JV squads coming into the 2018 cross country season.
