Apollo High School - Owensboro, Kentucky
2011 Class AAA XC 4th Place
Apollo has been a team in the making for the last few years. It has a strong core of runners who have been competing on the varsity since their freshmen year. Only one senior was lost from last year's group but the bulk of the team lies in the senior class so this is in a sense is a make it or break it year for the Eagles. Seniors Alex O'Bryan and Dusty Johnson and Junior Tristan Durbin all ran as the #1 runner for the team last year during the season. Typically they were all within a very short distance of each other.
This team placed fourth last year and has all top five scorers back giving them one of the most veteran squads in the state. They are an immediate threat to place top three in Class, but need to develop depth beyond their top strong top five with the three above along with James Easler and Landon Meserve. If Easler and Meserve can consistently run with the top three along with senior Mason Lambert this team will become more dangerous. Austin Richard, freshmen Mazden Tyler and Seth Boone should all be in the mix for the last varsity spot. This group has the potential to run well and will get several battles with cross-town rival Daviess County throughout the season to help prepare for November. But they will have to keep their eye on state not just the boys at Daviess.
Head Coach Bo Phelan said about his boys.....
- Things are looking good so far. As always, there’s a lot to be done before November arrives, but we’ve been putting in the necessary work to get where we eventually want to be.
- Two key things we’re looking for are a stronger mental racing focus, and a higher quality of depth than in previous years.
- Key meets for us are obviously regional's and state, but this year we’ll be going to Memphis for the first time. We’re really excited about the chance to run there this year. This will be a good early test for us to see how we can run in a really big meet against really strong competition. Similarly, the Louisville Trinity Invitational will be a big test as it always is. That meet seems to get bigger and faster every year.
