Athletes of the Week for the weeks beginning March 27th and ending April 10th

Boys’ MS Track Athlete of the Week

Brady Baker, Cooper MS

Baker posted a 5:09 clocking for the 1600 meter distance at the Cooper MS Meet, then, running for the Cooper Varsity squad, he laid down a 10:53 performance for 3200 meters just three days later. While the second performance won’t reflect on the middle school rankings, the 5:09 is a new state leader and the 3200 time would easily be the fastest posted by a middle school athlete this season.

Boys’ MS Field Athlete of the Week

Dominic Joseph, Tichenor MS

Joseph’s shot and disc double at Grant County this weekend was very impressive and he has placed himself very clearly amongst the best in the state after this weekend. In the shot, he posted the second best performance in the state to this point (38-08.5), to win by almost three feet, while in the discus, his throw of 94-4 was just good enough to hold off Owen County’s Dalton Mears (94-3). While the discus showing isn’t very close to Cole Kendall’s (Mayfield MS) state leader, it is plenty good enough to place him in a tie for second best performance in the state currently.

Girls’ MS Track Athlete of the Week

Gretel Caballero, Farnsley MS

At the JCPS MS Meet, Caballero left the field in the dust and posted two state leaders in the process. In the 100 meters, she laid down a smoking time of 12.81 and then returned in the 200 to post an equally impressive time of 26.25. Here’s some perspective for you: the 12.81 is the 6th fastest time in the state this year by any female in middle or high school, while the 26.25 is right behind the fastest performances from the two fastest female sprinters in the state. Caballero was 3rd in the 200 at the KTCCCA MS State Championships last year, but with a few more performances like this, she may be more likely to test the meet records in both sprints.

Girls’ MS Field Athlete of the Week

Halee Hudson, Grant County

This past weekend, Hudson vaulted herself into second place on both throws leaderboards with a couple of very impressive markings. She tossed one out to the 35 foot marker in in the discus to easily win the event, then followed with a 79-6 performance in the discus for her second win on the day.

Boys’ HS Track Athlete of the Week

Louisville Ballard 4x100 meter relay

At the Ballard-Eastern dual meet, the Bruins 4x100 meter relay squad did something of significant note. Yes, they posted a big win, but when they posted a state-leading time, they may have shown that they are a legitimate threat to Male’s relay dominance. Led by William Kannamore, who has the fastest automatic time in Class AAA thus far, this squad will look to keep things interesting throughout the rest of the season and we will eagerly await a final showdown at the state championships.

Boys’ HS Field Athlete of the Week

Alex Connelly, Covington Catholic

Connelly was with the Covington Catholic squad out of state this past week and uncorked a leap of 6-08 to claim the win. The performance is the best mark in the state this year and adds more fuel to the fire brewing up at Covington Catholic this year as they prepare to make a run at the Class AA team title once again.

Girls’ HS Track Athlete of the Week

Kaitlin Snapp, Danville

Snapp has quietly opened up her season in impressive fashion with three meets in the past two weeks and has picked off where she seems to leave off each spring. Dominating in the 1600 meters, she has posted times of 5:24, 5:14, and 5:12, while the 800 meter times of 2:26 and 2:25 have been impressive as well. Hopefully, Snapp will be able to stay healthy again and produce many more performances like these this spring.

Girls’ HS Field Athlete of the Week

Taylor Rosenhagen, Highlands

Rosenhagen is one of many reasons why Highlands returns as the heavy favorite once again in Class AA. The field event standout posted a state leader in the long jump (17-4) to win that event at the Boone County Invitational, but she didn’t stop there. Her 5-0 leap won the high jump as well, and her 33-4 in the triple and 31-7 in the shot put were good enough for 2nd and 3rd place as well. The high jump performance ties her for the state lead in Class AA, while the triple jump performance makes her the Class AA leader, while the shot put toss nets her 6th in the current Class AA standings.
