August 20th Meet Previews

The 2005 high school cross country season kicks off with two invitationals Saturday, August 20.

Richmond Model is hosting the first Battlefield Invitational at the Richmond Battlefield Historical Site on Rt. 25 south of Richmond. The event will start with an Open 5K at 9 AM, followed by a complete slate of elementary, middle school, and junior varsity races with the varsity races beginning at 12:55(girls) and 1:30 (boys). Teams competing: Model, Madison Southern, Madison Central, Berea, Rockcastle County, Raceland, Bullitt East, Dixie Heights, Elizabethtown, George Rogers Clark. Rockcastle County girls are ranked #2 pre-season with four runners ranked in the top twenty-Kayla Hayes, Laura Dollins, Jessie Asher and Michaela Hunter. Bell County High School will be hosting its Hokum Karum meet at the Bell Central School Center in Pineville. Meet format will consist of three teams of two runners running alternate 1 mile relay legs twice. Boys\' teams: Knox Central, Evarts, Corbin, and Bell County. The preseason rankings place the Knox team in 7th in Class AA. Also ranked in AA is the Bell County team in 10th. Some of the top boys in this race are senior Ben White from Corbin, Jaron Hammons and Chris Ward from Knox Central and senior Garret Johnson from Bell County. In the girls\' race there are entries from Corbin and Evarts high school, but the girls from Bell are the only entry with a full 3 pairs of runners. The preseason rankings Class AA , which place the Bell girls\' team 5th also ranks three of their girls: 8th grader Hannah Hobbs is ranked 2nd, and juniors Rachel Blank and Brooke White are ranked 4th and 24th respectively.
