High School Boys Distance Runner of the Year
Joe Mallek - Oldham County
During the 2009 Indoor Season, whenever Joe Mallek stepped on the track he brought his best. He opened up his senior track season with a victory in the 800m Run at the Wildcat Classic on January 24th running a 1:56.56. One month later he ran in the UK High School Invitational, one of the top indoor meets in the nation, and crossed the line first in the 800m. He ran a 1:54 point something but was disqualified, though he was following another runner. No matter what the final results said, he ran one heck of a race. (Video of the race.) On March 7th at the Mason-Dixon Games he broke the Class AAA record with his victory in the 800m Run going 1:58.32. He was named the KYtrackXC.com March 9th High School Boy Athlete of the Week. Joe has signed to compete for Bellarmine University next year.

High School Boys Field Event Athlete of the Year
Cameron Frazier - Daviess County
Frazier, a senior at Daviess County , won the 2008 Class AAA Kentucky State Shot Put title with a personal best toss (at that time) of 54-11.50. Where would one expect him to start the 2009 season? If you answered anywhere under 54-11.50 you would be wrong. At his first meet on February 7th at Henderson County he threw 55-00 to win. Two days later at Daviess County he threw a new personal best 57-02.75. After the meet he threw a legit 59-11. He went on to win the Class AAA Mason-Dixon Games Shot Put competition with a throw of 52-11.50 his only time under 55-00 this winter.
