McAtee, Eden and Weishaar lead Kentucky Teams to 3 National Championship Team Titles at the 2008 AAU National

Two strong Kentucky squads made their presence known at the 2008 AAU National in Decatur, Alabama.  Westside Track Club produced an Intermediate Boys National Champion team and Derby City Athletic Club provided a pair of National Champion teams in the Youth Boys and Young Women divisions.  Derby City also brought home another four second place team finishes with both Westside and Derby City both providing an additional third place team finish.

 

The Oakville Mounds course served as both the site of the Jesse Owens Classic and Alabama State Meet.  Thursday rains created some minor issues with mud at a couple different points on what was a primarily flat and fast course, but these areas were frozen over in the early morning Young Women’s and Young Men’s races.  Although the day started out cold, the 30 degree temperatures were replaced by progressively warmer temperatures that rose into the upper 40s.

 

Emme McAtee led Derby City’s Young Women’s team of Allison Riedling, Sara Davis, Amy Stamon and Kayla Franck to an unopposed team victory.  The temperatures played a role in slowing down the first race of the day, but the Derby City girls ran well in victory and produced four podium (top 8) finishers.  In the Intermediate Boys race, Westside’s team victory was led by Stacey Eden’s fourth place finish.  Stacey ran the majority of the race within reach of the lead pack, and held on well.  Stacey’s teammates David Bruce, Sean Vandermosten, Sean Breeds and Darius Barry contributed to a strong five man average of 16:44.  Derby City’s Youth Boys Team Champion team was one of the deepest teams of the day and consisted of Luke Weishaar, Tretez Kinniard, Zack Beavin, Thomas Cave, Jacob Thomson, Connor Sheryak, Sam Meredith and Paul Adams.  All eight boys walked away with individual top 25 finishes in their respective age divisions.

 

Derby City’s Youth Girls team finished second and also produced one of the stronger set of individual finishes.  Casey Richardson and Caterina Karas got to the podium in their age division, and Caitlin Beyea just missed the podium with her ninth place finish.  The team had another three of their eight girls walk away with top twenty-five finish medals as well (Cassidy Hale, Christina Shawver and Shelby Adams).  Christina’s race was particularly impressive as she was knocked to the ground early in the race, and had to make her way through a majority of the field to finish where she did.  And although Derby City’s Midget Girls team failed to make the top three, the team’s top five of Charliann Garcia, Taylor Adams, Amanda Elliott, Emily Bean and Christa Brutscher produced an excellent average time of 11:27.

 

It was a great weekend for the Westside Track Club and Derby City Athletic Club.  In all twelve races, a team from Kentucky was present and in eight of those twelve races, a Kentucky-based team walked away with a team award.  It was a great day for Kentucky Youth Cross Country.
