Class A Kentucky State Meet Recap Cold Wind & Mist Edition

What a day, cold wind, a little sleet what else can you ask for?  Even with the crazy weather the 2008 Kentucky State Cross Country Meet turned out pretty well.  A course did not slow down the times and just helped make the 5,000 Meter Run a little more interesting for the runners.

Class A Boys

At the Two Mile Mark this race was wide open with five plus boys bunched up together in a group.  James Maglasang (St. Mary) the pre-race favorite started to push the pace with Corey Stoll (Villa Madonna) stepping up to handle the challenge.  Maglasang ended up coming down the final hill by himself and coasting across the line to win his first Kentucky State Championship in a time of 16:08.79.  Stoll ended up finishing second with a season-best time of 16:16.86.

The St. Henry Crusaders looking for their seventh straight Class A State Title faced their toughest competition yet.  The pack philosophy of this young team worked as Senior Michael Whitehead led with a ninth place finish followed by his teammates in 17th, 23rd, 24th, 25th, 30th, and 31st.  The 2-5 runners had only ten seconds between them.  Villa Madonna finished second led by Stoll’s Runner-Up individual performance.

Class A Girls

Coming into the Class A Girls State Championship, Kaitlin Snapp (Danville) looked to be the easy choice to pull away with a sizeable victory.  Danielle Hoop (Owen County) and Maria Frigo (St. Henry) had different plans in mind.  A close race to the end with Snapp pulling away on the final downhill coming into the finish to seal her third consecutive Class A State Championship.  Snapp finished with an 18:25.51 the fastest overall Girls time from the 2008 State Meet.  Hoop, also the 2007 State Meet Runner-Up ran a best time of 18:29.97 and Frigo went 18:31.34 a personal best for her.  These three girls ended with the top three times at the State Meet which is usually spots taken up by athletes in the Class AAA race.

The St. Henry Girls won their second straight Class A team title over Runner-Up Walton Verona.  Three St. Henry girls finished in the top 7 Frigo, Lindsey Hinken, and Kelsey Hinken.
