Major Changes to the Mason County Indoor Track Facility

In August of 2005 the Mason County School Board purchased a 75,000 square foot building on 80 acres with no plan for what to do with it. Within 45 days the Mason County Cross Country Invitational was held on the site. 45 days after that the AA Region 5 Cross Country Meet was held. Somewhere between those two dates an idea that the building on the property could accommodate indoor track meets was hatched between Mason County Track and Cross Country Coach Mark Kachler and KTCCCA Director Frank Miklavcic. In the Winter of 2006 Mason County hosted two meets after Coach Kachler and some of his athletes had built an indoor jumping pit and stripped the concrete floor with a parking lot stripper. The response was encouraging but not overwhelming. In 2007 the indoor season saw the meets grow in attendance to the point that Coach Kachler and Frank began to discuss the possibilities of a quality running surface being installed. “From the beginning, before we even considered rubberizing the surface,  I have consulted Frank Miklavcic on virtually everything. We stole some ideas for the indoor jumping pit from the Mason Dixon Games. Hving used the facility for two years now, we can adjust some of the design as we lay out the new surface.  Our Administration has been receptive to the use of the building for Indoor Track Meets. Our Community has embraced the idea. We are a big basketball area. The idea of indoor track meets is a totally new concept but people have really been supportive. In forming a partnership with the KTCCCA we believe we can provide multiple opportunities for athletes to compete during a time of the year when few opportunities exist. Without the assistance of the KTCCCA, and Frank Miklavcic in particular, this could not be done.  The new surface, and sinking the jumping pit, takes us to a new level. I think it is a great opportunity for Track and Field in Kentucky. We hope to make this a  first class facility.” Stated Coach Kachler. The venue can host all the indoor events except pole vault due to the 14’ ceiling height in the building. The race venue will include High School, Middle School, Age Group, Masters and Open races. The 2008 race dates are January 19, 26, February 2, 9, 16, 23, and March 1.  The race site is located at 725 Clarks Run Road, Maysville, Kentucky 41056. It is a one our drive from Lexington, Greater Cincinnati, and Ashland. It should provide a great venue for indoor track in Kentucky.
