Class AA Boys State Meet Preview

As the middle class when it comes to school population, it is fitting Class AA has the second meet on Friday and Saturday.  The Tornados of Paducah Tilghman have dominated Class AA over the last few years, with the boys winning six state titles in a row and the girls seven in a row.  Can another school step up and stop the Tilghman athletes?  We will see.  Here are the Event of the Day, Record With a Chance to Fall, and Team Title Contenders for Class AA Boys.

Event of the Day

The boys 200m Dash has a group of athletes who all put up very similar times throughout this season.  As the third to last event, the outcome of this race could have a significant effect on the team title.  Any of the final eight could cross the line first.  Torey Parker and Jonathan Jones of Paducah Tilghman will attempt to get in front of Corey Jackson of Mercer County to help the Tornadoes continue their team dominance.  Scott Gill (Russell), JJ Hall (Lloyd Memorial), Oba Wilson (Lexington Catholic), and Morgan Sloas (Fleming County) will attempt to be in the way of Jackson, Parker, and Jones.

Record With A Chance to Fall

Chrys Jones (Mercer County) broke the Class A Triple Jump record last year as a member of the Harrodsburg track team.  With the consolidation of Harrodsburg and Mercer County, Jones has a chance to pull off a rare feat and break another class record in AA.  The Overall State and Class AA Record is currently 49-03 and Jones jumped a best of 50-09 at regionals last week.  After competing in the triple jump on Friday, Chrys will come back Saturday and go after the Class AA Long Jump record.  Jones best of 24-00.25 would better the previous state mark by five inches.

Team Title Contenders

This is a two team race between Paducah Tilghman and Mercer County.  These schools have very similar strengths with Mercer County led by Chrys Jones (Jumps) and Tilghman led by Mike Jones (Shot Put) and Andrew Warmath (Pole Vault.)  This is going to be a good battle with the winner possibly being decided in the boys 1600m Relay in which the Tornado are seeded first on the State Meet Performance List.
