BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – It has been a magical freshman season for Indiana track and field student-athlete Tre’tez Kinnaird and it is not over yet.
Kinnaird was part of a school record setting and All-American distance medley relay team and after winning the USA Junior Championship title in the 800m run, Kinnaird now has his sights set on the IAAF World Junior Championships this week in Eugene, Ore.
Kinnaird, who ran a personal best of 1:47.99 at the Kentucky Relays, will compete in the prelims of the 800m on Friday at 3:50 p.m. ET.
Kinnaird departed for Eugene last Friday and recently checked in to share some of his experiences and thoughts leading up to the race.
“The experience so far has been absolutely amazing. They flew us out here early so we could have time to get adjusted to the time change. I have gotten to know my teammates pretty well along with interacting with kids from other countries as well. I have also noticed that the famous “selfie” and “Wiggle” by Jason Derulo songs are very popular in other countries. I got to do a long run with the Italian marathon record holder which was awesome.”
“I feel like coming into this meet I am well prepared. This is something I have been training for all year and it’s finally here. I still feel like I haven’t had my breakthrough race yet, so this is a great opportunity to run something pretty fast. Having the racing experience from World Youth, I know what to expect coming in. It was so exciting getting the USA uniform and being able to represent my country. The uniform is pretty cool too because it’s all red and it reminds me of the IU uniform. Go Hoosiers.”
