A sunny Saturday morning and a flat course set the stage for the St. Mary High School “Viking Cross Country Invitational”. Growing in attendance every year since its founding, the St. Mary Invitational once again boasted a record number of entries. This year the meet had 650 registered athletes, with 107 high school girls and 144 high school boys running in the varsity races.
There were changes at this year’s invitational. The layout of the course had changed. A clock was also placed at the halfway point to display the time for spectators as they cheered.
Most noticeable for some, was that it was the first time for St. Mary to host its invitational meet without coach Chuck Gullo at the helm. After 42 years of coaching, he chose to retire due to a chronic tendon injury. He and his fa...
