Many of Kentucky's best went north to the Mason Invitational in Ohio. Five top five schools between the boys and girls were in attendance.
Class AAA Pre-Season #1 Assumption faced off against another national power in Carmel (IN.) Assumption is still without the services of two of their top runners, defending AAA champion Bailey Davis and 2012 800m Champ Katherine Receveur. Which left 3200m Champion Emily Bean to pick up the slack. Bean led the squad with a 13th place finish with a 19:10. Fellow senior Kenzley Defler was 19th with a 19:24. The teams pack then rolled in with the next three all within 30 seconds of each other coming in before 20:02. The team finished 2nd overall with 123 points.
The top girl at the meet was Daviess County's Whitney O'Bryan, she was 6th overall with an 18:43.05 followed by Caroline Grogan (Oldham County) in 10th at 19:02 and Amelia Reynolds 11th at 19:08. For comparsion sake, the winner of last week's Ryle Invitational (18:45) Christine Frederick was 2nd overall with an 18:29.
Daviess County's girls were 5th overall beating out 10th place, Oldham County by 54 points.
The boys side saw Kentucky's best individual performance as Daviess County's Daniel Southard beat out another duo to the line with a 16:12 to finish 2nd overall just one second up on 3rd and 4th. Cooper and Trinity made it rain after that bringing seven combined across the line before 21st place. Cooper's Zachary Stewart 5th Place 16:17 and Trinity's Andrew Ireland 7th Place 16:29 led each squad. Cooper through four was ahead of Trinity, but the depth of the traditional power got them this time. Trinity was 2nd overall with 109 points, while Cooper was 5th at 176. Daviess County was 10th overall at 287 with two of their top five competing at the Owensboro Invitational.
Kentucky had nine of the top 21 runners on the boys side between four schools.
