LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Former University of Louisville track and field letterwinner Matt Hughes raced to a personal-best time in the 3,000m steeplechase at the IAAF World Championships on Monday morning in Moscow, Russia, to advance to the finals of the event.
A two-time collegiate national champion in the steeplechase, Hughes clocked a mark of 8:16.93 to come in second in his heat. Overall, his time was the second fastest in the three heats, only behind the heat winner from France. Hughes, representing his native Canada is slated to compete in the finals on Aug. 15 at 12:20 p.m. ET.
Hughes made a significant improvement from his time at the IAAF World Championships two years ago in Daegu, Korea, where he placed 10th in his heat with a time of 8:58.52. Earlier this year, Hughes claimed the 3,000m steeplechase Canadian national championship in June.
During his time at Louisville, Hughes won the 2011 and 2012 national titles in the 3,000m steeplechase. For his 2012 crown, Hughes set the stadium record in the event. He concluded his UofL career with three BIG EAST outdoor titles in addition to his All-America accolades.
