Former WKU cross country and track student-athlete Brett Austin has been awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Committee announced Tuesday.
Austin, who was named WKU's Male Scholar Athlete of the Year in May, will continue his academic career at the University of Kentucky, where he will attend medical school. Austin graduated from WKU on May 11 with a perfect cumulative GPA of 4.0, double majoring in biology and chemistry.
In the athletics realm, Austin competed in 12 cross country meets during his four seasons at WKU. His career-best 8,000-meter time came at Pre-Nationals in 2011, where he clocked a 27:22 in Terre Haute, Ind.
"Brett deserves this," said WKU cross country and track and field coach Erik Jenkins. "He has worked extremely hard academically to achieve this scholarship. I appreciate all of the professors and advisors who aided in his success at WKU. He has a bright future in medicine and we will be cheering him on from the Hill!"
Austin will join former WKU cross country and track athletes Jeremy Sites and Patrick Jenkins in Kentucky's medical school. Sites (2010) and Jenkins (2009) also earned Male Scholar Athlete of the Year honors while at WKU.
