The KYtrackXC.com 5K Showdown went down tonight at Christian Academy in Louisville as part of the Harry Grescel Invitational. Luckily this year the meet did not have any thunderstorms like last. The night led off with the 1st Heat of the Boys 5K at 7 PM. Owensboro's Jeff Keeley took to the lead early before giving up the lead to Evan Lang of Trinity who was then overcome by William Mulloy of St. Xavier. Mulloy crossed the line in 15:52.49 compared to Lang's 15:55.53.
The ladies then took over the track with Kentucky State XC Record Holder Gabby Karas of Collins taking the lead fast opening with a 71 second 400. She never looked back from there, splitting 5:25/11:18 on her way to a new meet record time of 17:50.73. The race for 2nd was tight throughout between Samantha Simms (SHA), Karly Gawarecki (Holy Cross), Caroline Grogan (Oldham County), and Megan Smith (Danville) early on. The front three was able to leave Smith but picked up Christina Rucinski and Mattie Gottbrath of Manual by the end. Simms went 18:18.01 for 2nd, while Gawarecki was 3rd in 18:24.05 just beating Grogan with a 18:24.53. Rucinski and Gottbath were 18:27.83 and 18:30.28. Smith was able to hold on for 8th with a 18:46.83.
The 2nd Boys heat became less about time and more about place from the start as the front pack ran together throughout opening in the slowest 400 of the night at 73. The main pack started out with Patrick Gregory (Butler), Connor Sorrells (Barr-Reeve), Daniel Southard (St. Xavier), Connor Sheryak (St. Xavier), Chris Striegel (St. Xavier), and Nick Reader (St. Xavier.) By the end middle of the race it was down to four with Gregory, Sheryak, Sorrells, and Striegel battling. Gregory ended up winning with a 15:03.13 compared to Sheryak's 15:07.18. Sorrells was 3rd in 15:07.65 with Striegel 4th in 15:12.34.
