Class A State Meet Commentary

Class A

Just looking at the results shows some great performances for the Class A State Meet on Friday and Saturday.

Chrys Jones (Harrodsburg) broke the Class A Triple Jump record with a jump of 48-06. Quite impressive, not to mention it was not even his best jump of the season as he beat that at the Heart of the Bluegrass Meet on April 22nd. He also won the Long Jump at State. Chrys has been invited to the Golden West Invitational in California for the top track athletes in the nation.

The race of the day had to be the 400m. EJ Fields (Frankfort) beat Kwasi Obeng (Bardstown) to win the state title. All year, both of them have clearly been the two best 400 runners in the state, regardless of class. EJ ran a 49.08, with Kwasi right behind him at 49.15. They were only two runners to go under 50 seconds for the day.

Derrick Stallworth (Fort Campbell) won the 100m & 200m, breaking the Class A record in the 200m with a 22.08.

On the girl's side, Sharika Smith (Fulton County) won the 200m, Long Jump, and Triple Jump. She finishes her sophomore year with nine career state titles, including one state overall state record, not bad for only being half way through her high school career!
Jenna Siemer (St. Henry) finished her award-winning career off strong by winning the 1600m.

Overall in Class A there is a lot of youth to build on. On the boy's side, the only senior to win a running event was Chad Schmidt (Bishop Brossart). The girl's events were won mainly by underclassmen with just a few seniors. There are great things to come from Class A in the next few years.
