NKU harriers tune up for GLVC Championships with impressive runs at Illini Open on Friday

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Northern Kentucky University men's cross country team posted a second-place finish at the Illini Open on Friday.

Joey Mueller paced the NKU men by placing third individually with a time of 25:22 in the eight-kilometer event. NKU's Brendan Chwalek posted a ninth-place finish with a time of 25:58.

Lewis captured the team title with a score of 35, and NKU placed second with a total of 52. McKendree was third with a score of 55, followed by Indianapolis (71) and Illinois Wesleyan (146) in the five-team field.

In the women's race, NKU's Jerrica Maddox posted a 10th-place finish as the Norse claimed third place in the team standings. Maddox completed the race in 18:36, while teammate Kayla Justice was 12th in 18:39. The Norse finished ahead of Great Lakes Valley Conference foes Lewis and Indianapolis in the competition.

Host Illinois tied Northwestern for the team championship with scores of 35. NKU placed third with a total of 102, followed by Lewis (116), Indianapolis (126), Illinois State (132) and Bradley (188).

NKU next competes at the GLVC Championships Nov. 6 at Kenosha, Wis.
