Region 4 Class AAA Preview
Individual Favorite: Luke Weishaar (Oldham County)
The #1 ranked runner in Class AAA will go after the win Saturday in preparation for the Kentucky State Cross Country Meet. Weishaar is undefeated against Class AAA foes over the last two months. Eastern’s Kyle Covert improved tremendously over the last one month and will attempt to hang with Weishaar. Trinity’s Sam Meredith should be right there with Covert as well.
It is looking like only three teams will make it out of this region and those three (Trinity, Eastern, and Oldham County) should dominate this race. What is truly odd is that these three teams have avoided each other all season long with hardly any head to head races. Class AAA #2 Trinity led by Meredith should get the win but AAA #3 should fight them the entire way. Eastern’s should have two in the top five with Covert and Austin Zachary but then Trinity and their depth should roll in. Oldham County, ranked 8th in the last AAA state rankings has a nice pack but their four and five will be too far back (in this case 18th place) to beat Eastern or Trinity.
If Seneca can bring five runners to the line than a fifth team would get out of the region with Ballard, Seneca, or Southern earning the spot.
Teams: Trinity, Eastern, Oldham County
Individuals: Bryan Smith (Fern Creek), Evan Mack (Ballard), Shane Glover (Southern), Dylan Petripin (Ballard), and Caleb Barrett (Southern)
Individual Favorite: Assumption #1
Take your pick, Katherine Receveur led the team the first part of the season and now Emily Bean has been #1 the last two races for the nationally ranked squad. Either of them could cross the line first with Bailey Davis somewhere right behind them. If Assumption decides to tempo the regional this would open the window for one of the Grogan’s from Oldham County to win (Margaret or Caroline.)
AAA #1 Assumption is in a tough region with two other squads that are ranked in the top six in Class AAA (Sacred Heart #4 and Oldham County #6) but the Lady Rockets are going to just tear up the course on Saturday. If Coach Barry Haworth decides to run this race hard than look out as they could go 1-4 and bring five, six, and seven all in the top ten.
Sacred Heart and Oldham County have been ranked back to back the majority of the season with Sacred Heart always ahead. Sacred Heart spent the first part of the season running their freshman in the Junior Varsity races so it was hard to get a direct match-up between SHA and Oldham County. Saturday is the chance with Oldham County having their strength up front with the Grogan’s. SHA will counter with frosh Maggie Allen and veteran Jackie Puopolo. Oldham County needs big races out of Chelsea Bear and the Mullins sisters (Haley and Hannah) need take second place.
With only six teams competing this leaves former top ten ranked Eastern filling up the individual spots.
Teams: Assumption, Sacred Heart, Oldham County
Individuals: Charliann Garcia (Eastern), Tori Wigginton (Eastern), MacKenzie Blocker (Eastern), Shea O’Toole (Eastern), and Lindsey Neutz (Eastern)
