Louisville Track and Field Returns to Action at Kentucky Invitational

The Cardinals will face teams such as Miami (Fla.), Tennessee, UCF and Vanderbilt.

 January 10, 2013

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – After officially opening its season more than a month ago, the University of Louisville track and field teams return to action Jan. 10-11 at the Kentucky Invitational in Lexington, Ky.

The two-day event will be held at the Nutter Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of Kentucky, with action on Friday beginning at 5 p.m. and competition continuing on Saturday at 11 a.m. Live results will be available online atwww.UKathletics.com.

Along with event-host Kentucky, competing schools include Miami (Fla.), Tennessee, UCF, Vanderbilt and Florida A&M.

Louisville opens the first day of competition with the women’s long jump at 5 p.m., followed by the women’s weight throw, women’s high jump and then the men’s high jump. Closing out the day are the women’s pole vault and the men’s weight throw events.

The women’s side has athletes ranked in the top 10 in the weight throw (Amashi Kendall, No. 7) and the high jump (Michelle Kinsella, No. 2). Kinsella tied the indoor school record in the high jump in the season opener, clearing 1.85m/6-0.75.

Continuing action on day two, the Cardinals begin Saturday at 11 a.m. Among the opening events are the women’s triple jump, featuring Brittany Owens, the women’s shot put and the men’s 60m hurdles trials, in which Calvin Arsenault will compete.

Owens won the long jump and triple jump titles in her collegiate opener. Khadija Abdullah, who won the season’s first shot put title, will compete this weekend in the event with three teammates. Abdullah currently ranks fourth in the country in the discipline. A sophomore, Arsenault had a phenomenal freshman campaign in 2011-12 and was two hundredths of a second short of tying the 60m hurdles school record, set in 1993.

Later in the day, Andrew Stewart will compete in his first of two events, beginning with the mile at 12:30 p.m. He’s slated to run the 800m at 2:02 p.m. He placed seventh in the 800m finals at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships last season.

Louisville’s sprints group also will be in action in the early afternoon, with the women’s and men’s 60m trials. Should an athlete advance to the finals, they are slated to compete at 12:55 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively. A total of eight student-athletes – three men and five women – are scheduled to compete in their respective sections in the 200m shortly after 2 p.m.

The men’s throws group finally returns to action at 1:45 p.m. after competing in just one event on Friday. Freshman Steve Wade led the group in the season-opening meet with a third-place showing in the shot put. Sam Bombaugh, Isaac Bowling and Brad Vivace also will take part in the event.

Prior to concluding the meet with the men’s and women’s 4x400m, Tyler Byrne, Ernest Kibet, Edwin Kibichiy, Japhet Kipkoech and Luke Lovelace will participate in the men’s 3,000m at 3:05 p.m.
