The "Last Chance" meets on the weekend of May 13-15th, provided the setting for new school, and personal bests marks for the Bellarmine Track & Field program. The weekend saw the program earn yet another NCAA Provisional qualifying mark, it's sixth of the Outdoor season, as well as a US Junior National standard, but a qualifier for the NCAA National Championships may have to wait for another year.

First year distance stalwart, Robert Sandlin, earned his second US Junior National qualifying mark, running 14:57.80 for 5000 meters at the University of Louisville Twilight meet on Friday evening, May 13th. Previously, Sandlin recorded a 3:56.20 for 1500 meters to become the program's first ever US Junior National qualifier. He was later joined by freshman teammate, Ben Kolb who also reached the Junior National standard when he won the Conference Decathlon with 6330 points.

"Our freshman kids were so strong this spring," said Program Director, Jim Vargo. "It is a huge compliment to the kids and our program having two US Junior National qualifiers in three events. That would be significant even for a major, Division I program."

Second year runner, Angela Musk, gave the program their sixth NCAA Provisional qualifier of the Outdoor season when she ran 4:33 and change for 1500 meters at both the Louisville meet, then again at University of Indianapolis' Twilight meet on Sunday afternoon, May 15th. The better of Musk's two performances (4:33.20, = 4:53.3/1600), ranks her among the nation's top-25 times, but isn't expected to earn an NCAA Championship invitation.

Vaulter, Erin Dwenger, cleared a personal and school best 11-6 1/4 at the Indianapolis meet, just missing the Provisional standard in that event, but still earning a mark that ranks among the nation's top-30 performances.

Other expected contenders for the NCAA National Championships, Elliot Mattingly (hammer throw), Bryan Gennett (pole vault), and Carissa Martin (800 meters), all fell short in their efforts over the weekend. Both Mattingly and Gennett do remain among the nation's top-25 performances in their respective events, however. Gennett, currently at 21st in the Pole Vault with his best mark of 15-11 3/4, holds out a slim chance that he could be selected.

Several other athletes earned seasonal bests at the University of Louisville event. Fourth year Junior Meghan Shagena recorded 4:40.27 for 1500 meters (= 5:00.8/1600), while freshman Nate McKinney and sophomore Wes Fehrenbacher turned in efforts of 22.53 for 200 meters, and 154-11 in the Hammer, respectively.
