RICHMOND, Ky.
– The Eastern Kentucky University track and field team will compete at the Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Championships this weekend at Stewart Stadium in Murray, Ky. The EKU men and women both finished third at last year’s outdoor championships, and the Colonels won eight individual titles at the meet.

On the men’s side, Eastern Illinois won last year with 261 points, Southeast Missouri State took second with 128 points, EKU was third with 106 points, Tennessee State was fourth with 61 points and Morehead State was fifth with 22 points.

The EKU men and women both placed second at this year’s indoor championships, and both will look to excel in running events this weekend. The Colonels bring eight OVC-best times to the meet.

For the women, junior Lydia Kosgei has OVC-best times in the 1,500 meters (4:23.32) and 5,000 meters (16:07.14), and her 5,000 meters time is the fifth fastest in the East Region and the 21st fastest in the country. It is also 49 seconds faster than any other time recorded in the OVC this year. Senior Kat Pagano boasts an OVC-best time in the 10,000 meters (35:27.69), which she ran at the Penn Relays last weekend, simultaneously breaking her own school record of 36:07.10 and becoming the first EKU woman to break the 36-minute mark in the 10,000 meters. Junior Lutisha Bowen – who led the women’s shuttle hurdle relay team to a school-record time of 56.57 at the Penn Relays last weekend – currently owns the fastest time in the conference in the 100-meter hurdles (14.16), which she ran at the Indiana Polytan Invitational on April 22.

For the men, sophomore Soufiane Bouchikhi currently owns the fastest time in the OVC in the 5,000 meters (13:54.57), which is the second fastest time in school history and the 13th fastest in the East Region so far this year. Senior Kristopher Hawkins, meanwhile, has an OVC-best time in the 400 meters (47.35) and will look to crown his career by winning his first conference title in that event after finishing fifth in 2010, fourth in 2009 and eighth in 2008. Sophomore Victor Kemboi is tops in the conference in the 800 meters (1:54.20), while freshman Ole Hesselbjerg touts an OVC-best time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:00.47).

The meet begins on Friday, as field events get underway at 1:00 p.m. EST and track events start at 3:15 p.m. EST. The meet resumes on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. EST.
