Rain shortens Bellarmine Classic track and field event

4/23/2011 10:06:36 PM

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--Lightning, rain and the threat of additional dangerous weather caused both a late start and early end to the Bellarmine Classic track and field meet contested today at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium. Twenty-two events (12 women's and 10 men's) were completed.

Bellarmine athletes won eight of the events with Julia Zalewski winning both the javelin and the hammer throw.  The only other women's victory came in the 1,500 meters where Angela Musk outdueled teammate Carissa Martin coming down the stretch for a Bellarmine 1-2 finish.

Men's winners included throwers Elliot Mattingly (hammer) and Jonathan Neff (shot put). Knights also won in the high jump (Jesse Shelton), 110 meter hurdles (Seth Sigler) and 1,500 meters (Robert Sandlin).

Ligthning delayed the start of the meet, and shortly after the all clear, Bellarmine held a ring ceremony for the 2010 women's cross country team that won the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship last fall.  Bellarmine also recognized 21 seniors who were competing in their last meet at Bellarmine.
