Women First, Men Second at University of the Cumberlands Invitational

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky.
– The Eastern Kentucky University women’s track and field team won and the men’s team finished second at the University of the Cumberlands Invitational on Saturday at James H. Taylor II Stadium. The Colonels won 10 events at the 16-school meet.

Junior Diamond Benjamin led the women’s team, winning the women’s 100 meters with a season-best time of 11.98 and the women’s 200 meters with a season-best time of 24.86. Sophomore Picoty Leitich, meanwhile, competed in the women’s 400 meters for the first time in her career and won with a team-best time of 56.13. Other winners on the women’s side included junior Danielle Mason, who won the women’s 1,500 meters with a time of 4:49.15, junior Lutisha Bowen, who won the women’s 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.44, sophomore Jazzmin Jeter, who won the women’s long jump with a leap of 18-1 and the women’s 4x100 meter relay team – consisting of Benjamin, Bowen, Jeter and sophomore DanHeisha Harding – with a time of 47.10.

Senior Kristopher Hawkins won the men’s 400 meters for the second consecutive week, recording a time of 48.25, .02 seconds off his personal-best, set at last year’s OVC Outdoor Championships. Other winners for the men’s team included junior Evans Kiptoo, who won the men’s 5,000 meters with a time of 15:07.10, and freshman Chaz Grider, who won the men’s discus with a throw of 138-2.

The women’s team scored 184.5 points, 69.5 points more than its nearest competitor, Centre College. The men’s team scored 91.5 points, just nine points behind the top team, Campbellsville.

The EKU track and field team returns to action next weekend at the Tennessee Sea-Ray Relays.
