Pagano, Mutuse Win 5,000 Meters on First Day of Indoor Championships

CHARLESTON, Ill.
- Eastern Kentucky University senior Kat Pagano and junior David Mutuse won the women's and men's 5,000 meters, respectively, on the first day of the Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday at Lantz Field House.

After one day of events, the the EKU women's team is in second place with 33 while the men's team is in fourth place with 25 points. Both teams are expected to make up ground today as the finals of most running events take place on Saturday.

The Eastern Illinois women are in first place with 61.33 points followed by EKU, then Southeast Missouri in third with 28 and Tennessee State in fourth with 23. Tennessee Tech and Austin Peay are tied for fifth with 16 points. Murray State is seventh with 11.3 and Jacksonville State is eighth with 6.3 .

The SEMO men currently lead the OVC Championships with 49 points. EIU is second with 45 followed by TSU with 30 and EKU with 25.

Pagano defended her indoor 5,000 meters title from last year with a time of 18:09.18. The Hollis, Me. native, who already own's the outdoor 10,000 meters school record, was less than a second off Sarah Blossom's indoor 5,000 meters school record when she ran a 17:09.19 two weeks ago at the Washington Husky Indoor Classic.

Mutuse, who won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at last year's outdoor championships, won his first indoor 5,000 meters title on Friday as he ran away from the field with a time of 14:48.18. His nearest competitor, SEMO's Jason Lumpkin, was 22 seconds behind.

Other Colonels who scored points on Friday were junior Danielle Mason (sixth place in the women's 5,000 meters), freshman Laura Dollins (seventh place in the women's 5,000 meters), sophomore Daniel Jones (third place in the men's 5,000 meters), junior Alex Dreyer (sixth place in the men's 5,000 meters), the mens' and women's distance medley relay teams (second place).

Events continue at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday and the awards ceremony is expected to take place at 4:15 p.m.
